Anybody regret not buying a 4X4?

The access cab that I dragged to the gate at pismo when he was stuck in high tide wished he had 4x4

 

Anyone with 2WD 2009 (or later) regret not having 4WD? I'm wondering if the 2WD TRAC and Auto LSD are enough for folk who really don't need/want 4WD?

My only use for 4WD would be the occasional snow/ice/mountain situations (less than once per year). I would get 4WD if Auto LSD is not enough to do the trick.

 

When I bought my truck, a prerunner was not an option. I wanted to be able to drive pretty much anywhere I want to go and not worry making it through. I.e Snow/Ice, Mud, off-roading & camping, driving on the soft sand at the OBX, and any other situation that might need some additional traction at the turn of a dial.

I probably drive in 2wd 98% of the time but I have 4x4 at the turn of a dial for that 2% when I need it.

FWIW ... we got blasted with about 6 inches of snow and about 1/2 inch of ice in parts of Atlanta.

I have a 4x2 OR with a rear locker and that baby stayed in the driveway ...

Several of my friends have 4x4s and two of them wrecked their vehicles (minor damage to both) while driving in the snow & ice. ...

Also, another neighbor has a new 4x4 F-150 and took out a pole with it when he slid off the road. ...

Maybe having only a 4x2 actually saved me this time ...

I've had to use 4wd in my front yard if it had been a 2wd I would have been stuck or tore the yard to shit.

 

Sounds like they don't know how to drive. I drove around in it all day yesterday and drove into the office today from Canton to Alpharetta (23 miles one way) and didn't have any issues. Just because you have 4x4 doesn't make you invincible in the snow/ice. It just helps A LOT.

I also remind myself: for all the money I'm saving, I could rent a 4x4, the 1-2 times a year I actually get to spend some time in the desert. And there'd be plenty of $$$ left after that. Enough even to buy a dirt bike!

Does that mean I don't still drool over the 4x4s? Hell, no!!

 

Nope. I've driven through two snowstorms thus far (the storm the day after Christmas and the big storm on Dec. 19, '09). That's 570 miles from SC to NJ in that mess. I would've certainly used it but definitely didn't NEED it.

On ice, 4x4 makes absolutely no difference. Instead of two wheels spinning you have 4 and it helps not one bit in stopping. That's why you always see morons driving 4x4's into ditches or a tree during ice storms.

 

I really wish I had waited for a 4x4. I've considered trading countless times but financially as a full time college student I simply cannot handle making the payments. I've been to hell and back with that truck. I've lived in my truck. I plan on keeping my Taco for a long time.

I may attempt a 4x4 conversion when I'm out of school. As far as I know, nobody's done that on a 05+ yet.

 

If you live in snow country you gotta buy 4x4 , everywhere else it's optional .

One thing that surprized me is how great snow traction my 4x4 gets driving it in 2wd.
I have owned full size 4x4 trucks in the past and I needed 4x4 all the time in snow, they wouldn't go anywhere except dry pavement in 2wd.
The Tacoma has a more balanced weight feel where the back doesn't feel light

 

as they always say: Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

 

I had a 2009 PreRunner and got rid of it for a 4x4. Best decision I ever made. With the 2WD truck I didn't get stuck that often, only when I really pushed it, but now with 4x4 I simply don't get stuck, and it is stock. It also gives you much more control when in snow or on a very muddy road. When I had the PreRunner I never could have envisioned how useful 4x4 would be; it just gives you so much more confidence to go anyplace you need to.

 

Yes, not because I do (or so far ever had) needed it, but it would be nice to have.

 

Idiots are idiots, regardless of whether they are operating a 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.

My hunch is that more idiots driving 2 wheel drive will find themselves in a ditch than those driving a 4 wheel drive.

Those idoits we hear of driving the 4 wheel drives, i suspect, are more likely located in the areas that don't get a lot of snow. You don't see that too much in my area, in as much as you learn quickly, and are reminded on a regular basis, what you can and can't do in either.

My guess is that you will tend to see more of those 4 wheel drive idiots in areas that don't get as much snow.

Ditto Macgyver, a) cannot drive to begin with and b) just plain stupid. Many imbecels around these parts are in the same class. I went out Monday in the 4wd just to look around and all the idiots showing out in their pos jeeps and 8 foot tall fords forced me back to the safety of my garage. Not worth dinging up my vehicle.

If it didn't snow here, I wouldn't need it. I got around for 6 years in a Mustang, so it should be possible in a PreRunner, but I was sick of being nervous every time we got 3 or 4 inches on the road. I had 10" wide wheels on the back which helped a lot but it was still sketchy.

We got 6 inches this week here. I got home fine, shoveled the driveway and then got back in the 4x4 and drove around for about an hour. It's a great feeling to not have to worry about snow anymore.

 

Im torn on this as well... got a Pre-Runner b/c the deal was right at the time. Never had a problem until this Monday. Family and I went out to my brother-in-laws (Canton Ga) house to play in snow with all the kids together- had no problems getting there at all. Went to leave and couldnt get up the hills in his neighborhood I gave up after 3 tries, watched several others fail as well- and then came along a Ford F250 Crew Cab disel 4x4- went up with no problems, and then to add insult to injury- he turned around- went half way down the hill- stopped- backed up it as he laughed at all of us not able to make it.... Fucker... Im thinking time for a 4x4 Taco "just incase"
