Yeah, they haven't used suicide single pot master cylinders since probably the 60s? But the circuits are front right/left rear and front left/right rear.

    For future reference.

    Brake failure.
    1. DO NOT PANIC. You have control.
    2. Pump the brake pedal, there are still 2 active hydraulic brakes
    3. Emergency Brake. Apply with hand or foot lever. This will pull a cable to activate the rear brakes, not hydraulic.
    4. Shut off engine, leave transmission in gear......coast to a stop.

These actions and calm thinking will help avoid BREAKING the truck.

Makes more sense to split it that way

In my feeble brain it makes sense to split it front to back not left to right. So the vehicle doesn't try to pull one way or the other.

Old school Toyota used front/rear. 1972-2000?

With ABS systems the housing split diagonally.

With our active ABS systems, each wheel has its own emergency system. If anyone has an internal training presentation I'd love to see it. Software-driven brakes, still amazing to me but still needs brake fluid!

Crawl mode (2021 OR) was amazing as I put a 6"x6" block on the ground and it just went over it. You can hear the ABS pump going like crazy (it's loud).

Are you sure? I know most started as front back split. But I thought at some point in the last 20 years or so pretty much everyone made the change to diagonal split?

Yep, I screwed up as I had a brain fart thinking of the Volvo six circuit system (two front and one rear) from each side ad my mind went with that being the diagonal split.DOh! (Homer Simpson voice)

With ABS the Master is still front/rear but feeds into the ABS. The ABS Body handles the cross diagonal functionality.

Still same applies with total loss of one fluid on one side, you still have braking (pump those brakes and hold).

ABS and software have a tone of functionality to it so disengage brakes (anti-lock) to engage brake (traction control, stability control, and Off-Road functions).

That makes sense to have the ABS do the split instead of the master. Especially on our trucks with the disc drum combo.

This is why I cant stand the new cars that come with electric "parking brakes" and not emergency brakes. My wife's Tucson has one.

Have you tried to stop the vehicle when it’s moving with the electric parking brake? It’s just an electric actuator that applies the pads or shoes to the brake rotor or drum.

I haven't. I wouldn't feel comfortable because you cant modulate it at all. It's either on or off, and locking up the rear wheels on a Hyundai Tucson while moving doesn't sound like a pleasant experience. At least with the Tacoma handle, you can hold the release and modulate how much braking force you apply. The 4Runner is tricky because you have to push the pedal a second time to release it, but at least you can still just apply them lightly and then press again to apply more pressure as you also release the catch.

I threw my '99 Tacoma Prerunner into reverse going 40mph when I was 19... Was trying to 'shift manually' and pushed the lever the wrong way, jumped neutral right into reverse.

Truck made a horrible sound then stalled completely and coasted to a stop. Started right back up and never had any problems after that.

Sold it for a manual trans coupe a couple years later

I agree with 1-3 but shutting of the engine could lock the steering column causing an even bigger problem.

Funny, I do my own brakes, clutch work, etc., I've swapped the occasional engine and many a transmission, but I ever knew what stopped an automatic from rolling in park until now.
