Noticed a yellow marking on the top of the tailgate today almost looks like a highlighter. Wasn’t there a few days ago when I did a wash. Thinking someone may had did it when I was at a store unless it’s a paint defect?

tried to rub it off with a cloth and some spit but didn’t do anything. Should I try to remove with a buffer and polish next?

Meh, wait until your paint starts failing and flaking off. It's also coming off uner the hood.16251581216312994423729538054556.jpg

You may need to use a mild cut compound…don’t go too aggressive to start

Rule #1 Always start with least aggressive method.

Rule #2 Do not use random chemicals on your paint. No matter what forum member recommended them

Rule #3 Never use spit and a cloth. You could induce swirls and it’s just gross

+1 on starting with the least aggressive method first. Wouldn't recommend the spit-shine method, but since that didn't work for you, my guess is that some soapy water and a microfiber would fail as well. I'd probably try an all purpose cleaner diluted down 5:1 or so. If that doesn't work, step it up to Isopropyl Alcohol. And if that doesn't remove it, I'd clay it and try to buff it off by hand with some light polish or something like ScratchX or Scratch Doctor. I suspect one of those will work for you. Toyota paint is super soft, so I wouldn't jump straight to a compound and machine unless you absolutely have to.

Yeah what ever it was, was stubborn as hell.

Cleaned it with IPA and micro fiber then did some hand polishing with a light polish and i'd say 95-99 % is gone. Just a light spot on the top edge but its almost unnoticeable unless your eyeball is 5" away.

You guys are killing me! Besides, you forgot clay.

For the rest of you watching, it's a bit of an inside joke around here that some folks think rubbing compound, 303 Aerospace Protectant and clay will cure any detailing problem.

    had something similar happen.

I was drying off a customers Porsche 911 and the towel I was using stained right into the paint protection film on the front bumper.
