I'll be honest, I don't know what the OEM power lock is. Did certain trucks not come with the ability to unlock the tailgate when everything else unlocks?

Correct. My 2021 Sport did not have the power tailgate lock. I purchased the OEM kit and have yet to install it. Too damned hot lately.

That’s nuts! Why would they discontinue it? You just have to unlock your tailgate with a key?

    Yup, a physical key.

I ordered my OEM tailgate lock earlier today.

They provide you a way, the key, but if you want it to auto lock and unlock with the doors you have to buy the kit. I get it actually. On my second gen I never used the lock as I did not have any type of bed cover. Now, on my 3rd gen since I added a cover I ordered and installed the kit.

Like others have mentioned, no conflict with bed lamps and the tailgate lock. I installed both on my 2021 with no issues.

Were there any instructions you worked off of for the tailgate lock install? I have both to install on my ‘21 Sport and the lights seem pretty straightforward.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if it was different for a ‘21 rather than the ‘19 from the other post.

No difference that I recall, factory instructions are pretty good.

Just got back from a week in Montana and 2400 miles on the new truck. Cruises nicely at 85 on the HWY. My son dumped some melted ice cream on the back carpet so had the entire car detailed and ceramic coated. He installed the tailgate lock as well. Love it!

For anyone installing on a 2018 TRD Sport my kit from sparksparts it was 100% plug & play.

Well I just ordered the tailgate lock for my 2016 DCSB. The 20% off Tacoma is offering made it worth while.

Thanks to this thread I was able to get a good deal from Cobb County Toyota and installed it on my 2018 last weekend. Install was super simple and works like a charm. No more having to use the stupid key fob key anymore. Thanks guys.

Ok it's not just me! After I finished the install I was like "Toyota put these connectors on backwards!" since then I've been reading though pages and pages to see if it was only me. Unfortunately I didn't notice till after it was installed but I'm going to cut them off a few inches back and swap them or my OCD will drive me nuts. I looked at ordering new connectors but it seems like a huge PITA so swapping them with marine grade butt connectors and putting the split loom back over will have to do.

    That’s the easy way.

I have since acquired all the tools and terminals so cut and re-crimp would now be how I’d do it today. Terminals are cheap, seals and connectors aren’t expensive either but can also be reused.

Curious what the needed tool is, I do a lot of electronics work and hobby so if it has multiple uses I may be able to justify the cost.

This is my favorite jack-of-all-trades-on-a-budget crimper.
Terminals: male & female (the middle size should work best, IIRC it's 18 gauge wire in the harness?)

You can get a couple of seals to match (light grey if going Yazaki, dark green if going Sumitomo) if you really want.
Sumitomo (Corsa parts are TS090-PIN, TS090-SKT and TS090-SL) and Yazaki (090II-PIN, 090II-SKT, 090II-SL) are interchangeable and cross compatible.

De-pinning the connector requires removal of the TPA (white IIRC?) and a small screwdriver (1.5mm blade) is best for that.

Or you can get the connectors at the same time and cut the harness and not worry about de-pinning: male & female (note these are kits so they come with terminals and seals).

I was going to ask the same!
Do you have an Amazon version of that crimper?
I’m guessing panduit would be close to the too
