My truck lives in Vermont so this one's directed at other New England trucks and drivers: Do you get oil/synthetic undercoatings? How often? How much does it help with salt/rust issues?

Got a coating on mine last fall, and I'm wondering how much it helps protect the state of the frame/undercarriage in the long run.

    Thanks,
    Henry

Same here I got mine done at Carrara's hot oil rustproofing and gun shop near Rutland last year. Everyone does hot oil around there but I haven't heard much about it's efficacy compared to other types of undercoating.

I got my 2013 treated from day 1 at dealer initially. Then after fluid filmed at a place in Richmond on Rt 2 every Fall. Aldermans did CRC last October. Now I live in NEK so local garage oil undercoats it for me.

3rd Gen too, the timing cover leaks oil to spray all over the frame. Great feature.

Rubberized undercoating like Ziebart? Solid two thumbs down. It actually traps moisture and salt underneath the coating and accelerates corrosion. Fortunately (for them), you have to get it re-sprayed every year. This neatly covers the corrosion that's started and makes the problem even worse. Ask me how I know this.

Oil based coatings (Krown, Rust Stop, Waxoyl, Fluid Film, etc.) Solid two thumbs up. They flow into places the rubberized coatings would never dream of getting into. And, if re-applied annually, the actually do a very nice job of stopping rust. The only downside is that working on the underside of your truck gets that oil all over you and your tools. Personally, I'll take that trade off though.

 Unfortunately we just had this feature removed on my old man's 3rd Gen (luckily still under warranty).

2010 sprayed with Krown each year since new, spent its entire life so far in Canada and salty roads. Agreed, a bit messy to work on, but easy to take things apart. 20210620_171146.jpg
