Feedback on my rear bumper.

What do you guys honestly think of the rear bumper I made for my taco? Made out of 3/8 steel weight is about 80lbs. The frame mount brackets were made out of 3/8 steel at well.

 

Looks a little low to the ground and sticks out a little too much for my tastes, but that's awesome you made it yourself. Looks super beefy!

 

looks like a good quality but i agree with 1337Taco about it sticking out so far. Just a little plain for me.

 

Agree with the others...it could look better and a tad more clearance would be nice, but I have no doubt it'll hold up just fine to any abuse you can throw at it. Nice work!

 

Thanks for the feedback. It is the same ground clearance as the factory bumper (photo angle makes it look lower).

 

looks nice but the body lines of the rear stock bumper hide that gap between the new bumper and the tail lights, id be cool if you made a piece to hide the gap. Just my .02 but good work wish I could weld lol!

 

What's the purpose of a heavy bumper on the back? I can see it on the front as a briush buster, I've had one of those myself on a previous Toyota. What does the heavier rear bumper accomplish? Are you going to off-roading backwards?

 

always nice to have a little extra weight on the rear wheels for traction and also preloads the leafs a little for a smoother and more stable ride. recovery shackles are rock solid on the bumper with no flex. I can go on and on. How about telling the cons of having a heavy bumper on the rear.

 

Sticks out a little too much, but pretty good for something you made. If I got one for free, I'd put it on.

 

3/8's is over kill. IMHO. None the less, looks decent, just similar my thoughts to others, sticks out a little far and ground clearance.

I bought and made heavy bumpers and shit before, and it always ends up on the ground in the shed replaced by a nice light one

i think it looks amazing for you having made it yourself, i wouldn't put it on mine, but theres something to be had when everytime you look at it, you'll think, damn, i made that, i'm the only one with that bumper

I've never heard of a plate bumper specifically to add weight to a truck. Seems like you'd want the truck lighter to allow for more capacity for other supplies, tools, etc. I've always seen plate bumpers added on the rear so you don't fold the stock bumper if you catch it coming off a steep hill or rock. Also the reason they're usually higher clearance is to avoid hang-ups.
I think you did a nice job finishing the bumper and I give you credit for making your own! I think 3/8" is a little much and the lines could have been smoothed out at the corners. Otherwise, it looks stout and pretty indestructible. Nice work!

thanks for the feedback. the added weight is just a perk I wanted to make a very heavy duty bumper and I wanted it to look plain and beefy. The angle that I took my photos at kind of distort the clearance and other factors.

 

Alot of good feedback I appreciate it. The photos I took are a little tricky.

(1)Ground Clearance is the same as factory bumper
(2)The bumper sticks out exactly 3.5" from the tailgate
(3)The ends of bumper are one inch short of the rear side quarter panel on both sides

 

I like it a lot.
I love the fact that it sticks out more. I can see that being very helpful by giving that added protection.
