The actual beam patter is different as well. Usually a sharper cutoff. You don't want a retrofit with HID or LED projectors?

What you're describing is what I'd call "Euro style". All the Euro-style lights I've seen for '98s are cosmetic--they look great, but tend to have inconsistent beam patterns.

A true"Euro spec" light would actually be built to European regulations. Hella E-Code lights are a common Euro-spec option for 95-97 Tacomas. Resident lighting expert crashnburn80 sums up the differences well over here: 95-97 Headlights, H4 conversion

No I don't want LED, I don't wanna be that jackassthat blinds oncoming traffic... never considered a HID retrofit cause I just assumed the clear lens fronts would be an upgrade from the stock ones

I've held off on updating my headlights for this reason too, seems like all the options for 98-00 are mediocre.

I have a wild hair idea about getting a set of the anzos with the clear front housing (aka, it has no lenses), and then cutting out the back to fit in a 7" round, which would open up tons of options, but haven't gotten real far with it.

It seems doable, but doing a good job of it is going to be a pain in the rear. If only I still had access to a CNC

The problem with Euro spec here in the US is they have that sharp cutoff that keeps going up. Once you start upgrading bulbs to be brighter then all that light is hitting everyone's rear view mirror. It's not bad for oncoming traffic but for people in front of you and in lanes to the right. At least with a projector you're limited to the cutoff line.
