Tire upgrade

Hey everyone,

I am wanting to upgrade my tires. Want to get a little bigger and all terrains. Only have basic road tires right now. However tire sizing is freaking confusing. I have a 2012 Tacoma SR5 4x4, and have stock rims. My current tire size is P245/75R16. I am looking to upgrade tires for off road/trail capabilities if needed. Nothing crazy just some trail driving and sandy beaches. My concern is, how much bigger can I go width and height? Can i get 255, 265? or will it not work with stock rims? How big of tires can I go on stock rim size?

I was able to fit firestone destination a/t2 265/75/16 on my stock 15 4x4. They have only been on about a week but I haven’t experienced any rubbing. I can even post before and after pics in the morning if you would like to help you decide.

 

I would greatly appreciate this. To add, I do intend to lift my truck as well, but only about a 2in lift max. So I know that will allow larger diameter tires but still unsure how width goes and the changes i can make.

A leveled tacoma can fit a 285/70r17 which is a common package. It's either 70 or 75 I always mess it up but yea.

 

I'm running 265s with no issues...

 

Another "how big a tire" thread? *checks the calendar* Yup, it's a Friday. All we need now is another "what oil do I use?" thread and the cycle is complete.


Jokes aside; 265/75r16 is the biggest tire that'll fit when stock.

Perfect answer right there, and as shadow posted above, about 1" taller.

 

Those numbers alone don't tell us much

The 1st 3 digits are the tires width at the sidewall in millimeters. You really need the 2nd set of 2 digit numbers which is a ratio of the tires width to height to mean anything. The last 2 digits are the rim diameter which also matters.

A 265/70/16 will be about 1" wider than what you have, but will be the same overall diameter. With that size you won't lose any power or fuel mileage, and the wider tire looks better for most people.

265/75/16's will be roughly 1" taller and 1" wider and is the size I use. Big enough to look good, but not so big that it makes much difference in performance. Any bigger and you lose noticeable performance.

You could probably make 255/85/16's fit a stock truck They would only be 10mm wider, but about 2" taller than stock. They are more expansive, only available in heavier E rated tires, and there are far fewer options to choose from.
