Oh and these prices are the new normal. Inflation is a real thing regardless of the .16 cents saved on hot dogs this year.

Absolutely correct. It isn't just a Tacoma phenomenon. Once supply picks up, which I expect may not occur until early-mid 2022, I expect prices will level out. For now, my local Toyota dealer has a $2,500 markup on Tacomas.

I was at the dealer yesterday getting 10K mile service. It's a small dealership (very small), but they did have 4 new Tacos on the lot.
All upper-end ones with all the bells and whistles .. But they were there.

A few days after I purchased my Tacoma May 6, 2021 the prices jumped 2000.00. Was glad to have done the deal.

I suspect it didn't look like that when he bought it. Nice rig. Wish I was as handy.

It didn't run- neighbor had it since new and had all records and just wanted it to find a good home as he can't fix a lightbulb and lost interest. It's a non rust leather interior gem. I out a new fuel pump, side mirror and replaced front brakes. Runs absolutely amazing

Day I brought it home a couple weeks ago. It has been a project every weekend. Like replacing shifter bushings etc. All small cost but time consuming projects.

The guy also had no idea what the real value was, as he just wanted off of his driveway as his wife was yelling at him about it. I had it running 1 day later. Score for me

Unfortunately, the reality is we have no idea what the future will hold. If you could go back to just 2018 and tell someone everything that transpired over the last couple years they would legit tell you are crazy. "no man I swear, people will just accept it as the new "normal" too!". The stock market is crazy, the housing market is crazy, car prices are crazy, school costs are crazy, etc. Additionally, our dollar that has no actual backing has been printed at unprecedented numbers over the past year. and the list of WTF factors goes on for days. I don't think we can count on anything going back to the way it was. and just wait until *censored country* invades Taiwan. Pretty sure that will disrupt global supply chains just a tad more than COVID.

Same for motorcycles. I've been trying to find a DRZ400SM for a year now and all dealers are showing them on a waiting list, you can't find any in a showroom. When a dealer in LV had some the price quoted had literally a $2800 markup and the salesman said it will still sell that week. I think I'll wait until the chip factory gets rebuilt...

Production is back to pre-pandemic levels.

Problem is the demand fueled by "borrowed from our grandkids" fiat currency that flooded the market in the last 2 years.
Prices for used cars started to go up before the prices for new ones went up. I will be seling one of my cars to my oldest kid (college student), so we have been keeping up with the used prices for a while (he needs to know how much to save). I have seen price on it going up steadily in the last 9 months, not down.
I believe that a lot of people upgraded their old cars to better used cars, once they got a chunk of "free" currency. That drove up the used car market. Others went to new cars, bumping up the new car market.
Then there are people like me who did not plan on upgrading their cars, but see writing on the wall for hyperinflation. They decided to buy now to lock in the low interest rates.

The problem is the computer chip shortage, once that's back to normal the prices should settle

The biggest thing people have to remember is that it's only a good idea if you can sell high and buy at MSRP or below, otherwise you're selling high to buy high. You want to make sure you trade in at the dealership you're purchasing from as well to benefit from the tax savings. Otherwise, if you sell privately or to Carvana, etc. you'll get the cash but have to pay full tax again on your next purchase. On a $40,000 vehicle depending on your province or state, this can equate to $5000 in missed savings.

With the shortage of inventory on ground, no one is discounting or trading inventory they have right now... so if you're in a position to wait, factory order and negotiate a deal below MSRP - most dealers will take this kind of deal. A lot of OEMs are tying future allocation to RDRs (registered sold customer units) so it's advantageous to take your order as they'll likely get more inventory from the OEM.

Obviously people can do what they want but this is my advice as a Pre-Owned Sales Manager in domestic automotive for the past 10 years.

12.5% sales tax? Damn, you get screwed on the taxes in Canuckestan. The high end here is around 7%.

Bingo. Taiwan is the big chip maker now. Intel has been slacking and is now playing catch up.
