I agree - lockout is more annoying than a strong spring, but sometimes neither is good! Hahaha :anonymous:

You will no longer have that problem (accidentally going into reverse) with the Core shifter!

I decided to just read through this whole thread yesterday and the day before to hear more impressions, what to do / not do, as well as pros and cons. I definitely think it will be easier to know which gear I throw it into after installing it, and will rely less on whole arm shifts, and more wrist flicks (which I’m more used to).

Well, mine is in. Have been driving it for the past few days.

    omfg. What a difference.

Throws are drastically shorter than even the u r d short shifter I had in there before. And it feels plenty solid. Stick position isn’t perfect. But, it’s definitely livable. I can play with that easily enough. (Chris suggested the 4106 stick to start off with for my odd situation)
The added “noise” is negligible. I was actually really concerned about that. But, it’s not really something to worry about. At least not with the heavy @7r41lbr34k3r brass core Delrin knob I am running it’s not. I suspect that it’s weight is taking some vibes out.

Great to hear! I have a Traipbreaker knob as well (ss with Delfin core). Glad to hear this knob may help reduce the vibration sound. A few questions…

    How long was the installation?

You mentioned the stick position being weird. Is your situation unique or do you just not like where the stick sits after installation?

A heavier shift knob is exactly what I was thinking as a next step to help reduce noise in my setup.
Good to hear it's worked for you.

Install took maybe 30 minutes. I did it while it was running with the ac on. Everything was quite hot. Such is life in PHX during the summer.

Yeah, I’m using a different stick than the regular 3rd gen kit. My truck is a second gen with a RC62F transmission installed. So, the shifter sits basically 1.75” further back than where it was with the original transmission. There was concern about console clearance.

I’d like to see more of what everyone else’s looks like without the boots in place tho. Is there an adapter in play to re-position the stick on the regular kit? I seem to have some space to play with. I might just try the normal 3rd gen stick setup just for shiggles.

Would I be able to get some pics of your set up and how does the stick differ from the standard 3rd gen setup?

my knob on the Core is like 120g or so and i have very little noise. i also have an extension on it. the key to getting rid of the excessive noise in my case was using blue loctite where the extension meets the shaft, and also having leather wrap on the whole arm. when i had some heavier knobs on it the noise was the same.

a light knob on this thing after it breaks in is a dream, it pops into position with a perfect mechanical action and zero play. i couldn't ask for better.

@lapoltba, quick question/clarification about your installation. I'm assuming you had to remove the staples for the inner stock boot so that the two stock boots could be separated and then installed separately with the Core Shifter, correct? So, remove staples, remove inner stock boot and then the process for installation is inner stock boot > Core Boot > Outer Stock boot. I'm assuming you used the provided Core grommet at the top as well?

Sounds about right. I think in addition to the Staples, the stock boots are glued together at the corners. I was able to separate them without tearing anything very carefully. The inner stock boot is a pretty tight fit and you will need to adjust it (up and down/rotationally) to get it to sit nicely, but it does work out well. I didn't use the knob or rubber grommets that came with the shifter since I have a Ti shift knob and custom collar from @7r41lbr34k3r.

It looks like the updated core design no longer comes with a dedicated boot on the shift tower. The instructions have also been updated where it mentions trying to stretch the inner boot over the tower. Due to a boot no longer present in the updated design, it looks like the stock boot doesn’t need to be separated. I’m attempting the installation tomorrow and will report back. I as well have a trailbreaker custom knob (SS). Looking forward to getting it all out together!

Installed mine today. A few notes:

1.) the updated design no longer comes with a rubber boot.

2.) the stock inner boot can indeed be stretched around the core shifter however, I found it the easiest to remove the stock inner boot from the outer boot first.

3.) This low profile all-in-one universal joint 12mm socket and a ratcheting box wrench (with swivel) REALLY made things much easier with the two back bolts. TEKTON 1/4 Inch Drive x 12 mm Universal Joint Socket | SHD08112 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R88T1NT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_D9JDC1YNSE9QPM24TCBQ?_encoding=UTF8

4.) It’s near impossible to get a torque wrench hooked up to torque-to-spec those two back bolts so it was a “RFT” strategy there. Torquing to spec the front two bolts was easy. Regardless, that shift tower isn’t going to move.

5.) I must have gotten lucky as the factory rubber gasket and dowel pins all stayed put and no prying of the stock shift tower was required. I was super happy about this as it made removal much easier.

4.) Use a little oil on the breather fitting to make re-installing of the breather hose a breeze.

5.) Core recommends a 30-35 ft/lb torque value for the the two stick mounting bolts… this is way too high as at 20 ft/lbs, the washers began to warp. I used some blue loctite and torqued ton20 ft/lbs. 30-35ft/lbs is way too much IMO.

6.) The install took me 2 hours total. After reading through the instructions and browsing through installation tips both on URD’s instructions and Core’s instructions, I felt fully prepared. The installation was very straight forward but doing things right and taking your time are important. I think 2 hours is a good estimate for how long this installation takes.

6.) Noise/sound/vibration: This seems to be the million dollar question. Here’s my experience. First off, owning an SS stainless steel weighted knob with a delrin core (trailbreaker) I fully intended on reusing it especially with there being a cheap adapter to be able to install it on the Hurst stick. With that said, I proactively decided to cover the stick in Dynamat sound deadening material (pic below). I’m not sure if the Dynamat combined with the ss/delrin knob helped but the extra sound in the cab is negligible. I was actually surprised it wasn’t louder. The sound can best be described as some very quiet static. Vibration can be felt much more with the Core version while holding the knob. This doesn’t bother me. For someone who has two very picky young passengers, the extra sound can barely be heard from the front seat and I don’t think my kids will even notice the extra sound. I do think there’s something to be said with a weighted knob that uses a few different materials to quiet down the shifter. Again, this the only setup I have used and I’m completely fine with the extra sound volume this thing puts out.
    EF5D7D26-3BD1-4BDE-9CF9-D9E8AA474D7E.jpg

Here’s a pic for attention. This was with the stock shifter but as I want to keep the factory shifter boot look where it attaches to the knob, the picture here pretty much looks the same after the Core installer.

At the end of the day, the shorter throws and the extra effort required to move into reverse are all great! It will take a few drives to re-program my brain but shifting just got a lot more fun!

nice write up. some of us had these bolts loosen during break in and required re torquing. i did as the grooves all came together and that's when it took the proper recommended torque... but i didn't use loctite initially so ymmv. good luck. and happy 4th.
