I use mine for 4wheeling in places where larger trucks can't go without damage. I have a crew-cab Silverado I use for towing, an old Toyota P/U with an 8' bed for Home Depot runs and an F-550 with a Service Body and 40' man lift for a work truck. All have their uses and are just as much 'truck' as the next.

I would submit that of even greater environmental significance than the production of Li-ion batteries is their disposal. Have a look around YouTube and some of the environmental watchdog websites for videos on how these batteries are "recycled" once they're no longer usable. It will make the Indian ship breakers look like a Greenpeace picnic!

The real issue with PHEVs is that most people don't actually plug them in and thus don't get any of the fuel economy savings the vehicle is capable of getting

Ambient innumeracy of the masses : The "Facts" about electric motor efficiency from Wiki "an electrical motor is far more efficient than an internal combustion engine at converting potential energy into work - turning the wheels that may move a car down the road, as there is minimal waste heat coming off the motor parts, and zero heat cast off by the coolant radiator and out of the exhaust" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_gallon_equivalent. I guess the efficiency calc did not include the (coal+air = fire)+ Rankine cycle part of the electric motor thing.

Mining anything of the ground is environmentally unfriendly (ever seen Gillette coal mine in Wyoming?). But lithium (batteries) are at latest recyclable, with up to ~95% of Li being captured for reuse in newer recycling plants. Which is much better than coal, oil or natural gas that turns into CO2 after one use and sticks in the atmosphere and oceans. An electric motor is also ~90 efficient, while ICE is ~30 efficient. So even if the electricity is produced by fossil fuel, overall impact would be much less.

I'm not fighting anything, simply making the point that all of these holier than though, "I'm saving the planet because I drive an electric vehicle" people are no less guilty of causing environmental damage than those of us using fossil fuels. I really wish that governments would force companies to remove the "zero emission" tag that they have on all-electric vehicles under truth in advertising laws.

Funny how people bring up recycling of Li, when we have 0 commercial technologies to recycle CO2 released by fossil fuels.

Sorry my sources are on my work computer. I'm an energy researcher and this is a common theme for those who are forecasting transportation energy demand. I can send you a link tomorrow.

your thought process is entirely self serving. By your assumption, the only options are fossil fuels, or walking, since walking is the only option that creates zero environmental waste. But wait, what about the factory that made your shoes, they pollute, so might as well just drive an F350 everywhere because pollution is pollution.

that’s essentially the argument you’re making, their are levels of environmental impact to everything, electrical vehicle production requires more up front impact, but overall lifetime impact is less. You also need to factor in your electrical sources makeup, where I line in Minnesota, renewables make up a substantial total portion of our grid, where I grew up in Wisconsin, it’s 80% coal still. Environmentally it makes sense to drive electric here, but the same car has more or less impact based on where you plug it in.

it’s not black and white, look beyond your preference for actual facts.

Cool. I didn’t mean to come off as flippant, though I realize I might have. I’m actually curious about it

I think people just like electric vehicles better. That you think they think they're all saving the planet is probably wrong.

I mean if they can take the engine out and put a 150hp motor on each wheel of my Tacoma, I'm gonna sign up and I don't really care what the planet does anymore than I do now.
