Figured I'd throw my more experienced 2 cents in here, after I decided against adding an aftermarket one.

This is what I tow, a 18ft Palamino Palomini. It is 2950 empty, 4000 max load, with water. I more often than not have the truck loaded to payload while towing it, with a dirtbike in the bed. Towing at a rough average of 65mph, over a 600km trip, while data logging, I recorded an average trans temp of 197f. While a tiny bit high, I didn't have any issues with it, so I decided I'd just leave it be, as the truck performs amazingly. The highest I've seen over my 3000km in total towing this trailer so far was 203, and that was WFO, up a hill, in 98f heat.

An important thing to note is that I'm close to sea level, in Ontario, Canada. I'm in hilly terrain, but rarely climb over 1000 feet of elevation.

Sorry for the terrible formatting, I'm on mobile.

Blows my mind lol. This is basically empty (5 gal water, camping gear) up a hill.

My coupe had a built in trans cooler rad setup and would go into limp mode, locking the rpms and 4th gear to protect the trans. Anyone who pushed the ZF trans installed an aftermarket cooler to keep temps down. After installing one and abusing the piss out of the car; never had limp mode or any problems with the transmission. I'm all for aftermarket coolers and am looking for a travel trailer this fall/winter. Will definitely be doing all the necessary upgrades to ensure longevity of the truck. The biggest pain is usually filling up transmission fluid. Did it three times on a couple of coupes and the stupid ZF procedure has you sport shifting the gears 1-4 as you pump in fluid. Not scary at all using just jack stands while your arm is right next the exhaust.

    Stupid question (on my part)...

Just looked at my window sticker that came on my 2020 TRD OR. As part of the tow package it includes "engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, etc." Is that the same as the transmission cooler that is no longer installed on the 2021?

You have to go out to your truck and look. All have the trans cooler in the radiator and some also have the aux cooler in front of the radiator.

Maybe too late, but I ran a B&M on my fj62. It was the largest one they made. Cost around $80.

Jeez! What kind of elevation are you at? I'll try and figure out how to upload the file containing the info I quoted from my phone.

This was running around town, 45 mph avg, in 100f with about 500 lbs in the bed. Stop and go traffic. Next time I'm on the highway with the trailer I'll log it so we can compare. Wonder if Canadian trucks get a bigger cooler or something....

After perusing Tundra sites - Tundra also lost the aux trans cooler for 2019+ models - I'm seeing Toyota did software changes so the torque converter locks up when the trans temp reaches about 250 degrees.

If you're in D or whatever gear the trans will lock the torque converter to keep pan temps "within engineering standards for expected usage" in Mike Sweers speak.

This man Genuine Cooling Systems – 2019+ Toyota Tundra Transmission Cooler Kit built a kit for the Tundra and Sequoia 5.7l that is awesome, uses the same plumbing from earlier models.

The bottom line is Toyota saved a huge amount of $$$$ deleting the aux trans cooler from their 300 thousand built per year truck lineup and did a gimmicky software fools gold.

One of the first things I did after buying a '19 Sequoia was get the genuinecoolingsystems kit. Maybe someone can put together a kit for the Tacoma.
