All very good points. I’m more interested in the versatility of t-slots that the aluminum would offer. On the other hand, I’m more likely to use it for hauling lumber that’s too long for the bed, so strength is probably more practical. The Amazon description of the rack had the weight in it. I compared it to a Prinsu and I think the difference was only 10 or 15 lbs.

Some quick fist axe/shovel mounts I got off Ebay. Almost seems like they were made just for this rack

    Really targeting that audience, eh?

For real though, nice video. It's better than a lot of the other ones I watched when I was looking to buy.

Thanks so much for the nice feedback!! Much appreciated.

Honestly these forums are EPIC! We wouldn't have even bought the Taco if it wasn't for all the great info here.

And yeah we don't do a lot of vids where others have done something similar. There's so much info online for the Tacomas, we haven't experienced that with our other cars. Thats why Sofia installed this one. Also if I couldn't do it better or more detailed than than what's already available then I wouldn't do it.

We only started doing YouTube because we were so frustrated trying to find help on fitting out our cars, so we were just sharing what we were learning.

Definitely a great forum, less gatekeeping than some of the other big ones.

    Keep at the videos!

    Hey everyone,

Here I am about a year later, and I am getting some serious rust on this thing... it's disappointing because I feel like overall it's taking away from the appearance of my truck. Anyone else having issues with the hardware and/or the rack itself flaking and rusting? I am in New England, and winters certainly are not kind to our cars, but I didn't think this would be rusting so quickly.

I am about 3 months after the install and have the front right tip of the rack rusting a bit, looks like it chipped or something at one point. I thought I also noticed some rust starting around the weld of the rear cut-out when I was washing the roof.

I mentioned the chip somewhere and someone speculated that the rack is laser-cut, leaving hashes edges that have a tendency to chip and flake but cant confirm anything. Just wire wheel it and touch it up I guess.

I don't intend to keep in on the truck for the winter cause the whole thing would be rusted to shit after a northern canadian winter.

I probably should consider taking it off for the winter, but it was a b*tch to install in the first place...

where did you get the rust? is the powder coat missing, scratched, or otherwise breaking down? I'm not in New England so I don't know what effect a real winter would have, there's a small amount of salt in the air around here, but hardly any precipitation. For me in So Cal, after about one year, no rust anywhere on the rack or hardware. I got the black hardware and put a healthy amount of silicon over the hardware at the bracket to roof connection.

3in lift, Bilstein 5100 Ome coils front. Bilstein 5100 Ome el095r leaf springs. Hooke Road roof rack. Lil BS fab cab mount relocation. eBay snorkel.
I live in a fairly dry climate and have had my roof rack for about 2 years and have very little to no rust.

Wheels, tires, intermittent wipers, better rearview mirror...
We ordered a Hooke Road roof rack with integrated led light bar. I am planning to use it to strap a paddle board and a kayak on top. We also have an A.R.E. CX Classic that is level with the top of the cab. It has two Yakima tracks on it. So I'll be fabricating some cross bars and feet to go in those tracks and to match with my Hooke Road rack on the cab.

I read this whole thread, all 57 pages, to get ideas. :)

My kayak cradles are designed for round bars only, so I will need to upgrade the u-bolts or figure something out.

My wife's paddle board is 32" wide. So it will be interesting to see how the kayak cradles fit next to it.

The kayak cradles have this round clamp on the bottom. I think it won't be compatible with the Hooke Road flat crossbars. It works fine on my Jeep Liberty bars, but as the next picture shows, it needs an inch of clearance under the crossbar for the plastic wingnuts.
    IMG_20210629_190713_484.jpg
Basically I can tell without even having the Hooke Road rack on hand, I will need to modify something to get this working.

Delivery may happen as soon as tomorrow. I am getting excited!

Get the brain workin! I think you should be able to find a way. My thought is to find a flat plate and just bolt it on to the crossbeams. Would require some metal cutting and hole drilling.

New version of the rack seems to be out now. And it looks like some of the criticism here have been answered. The holes on the wind deflector are covered and it looks more friendly to chop up for access cabs. Also the made long slots for mounting gear instead of the few holes we have now. AND rubber lining on the bottom of the wind deflector.

All in all good improvements. Might upgrade to this one in the future
