Dat clutch tho

Looks interesting. Now just need to figure out the fitting size and thread type.

 

Wonder if that is what makes the clutch so stiff and slow in cold weather.

 

My guess is the small reservoir mounted out on the side of the fender is exposed to the cold.

 

Not on my sport. It's hooked directly to the brake reservoir. Plus, the fluid in the reservoir is not in the clutch system(yet), so has little to do with the clutch feel IMHO. I assumed there was some sort of restriction designed to prevent shock load of the drivetrain by some idiot side stepping the clutch. I'm thinking this little device has something to do with it.

 

Looks like bypassing will be easy enough.

It looks like the upper line on the 2005 is a hard line, but the simplicity of tweaking a bit is cool.

The service manual says that the upper line is flexible. I am going to look tonight or tomorrow. I'm wondering if the support bracket for that flex line could be flipped?

 

Also, has anyone bypassed the accumulator already?

 

It does looks like it is a flex line on the top side:


The clip cannot be flipped. It is more of a channel that the line rides in.

The area is kind of tight due to the second cat and the bracket that supports it. I will try to get sizes when the area is cool.

@St.Germain . I was talking with a friend. He has a SnapOn double flaring tool that he used to reline his Bronco. I will dig around to see if it will work on metric sizes.

I have some 3/16in line, am looking for some female ends, and am still waiting for my friend to get his double flare tool back.

Also, that upper bolt for the heat shield is an absolute PITA to remove and install without removing the cat bracket.

 

Clutch is slow in cold weather because it's full of hydraulic fluid that thickens in temperature. It gets faster as you drive because it warms up and loses viscosity. Leave a bottle of aunt jemima's outside all night in the winter and you'll understand.

I'm also interested in the results of this thread. I've not noticed any problem with the 'feel' of my clutch, including while wheeling. Maybe my definition of 'feel' differs from everyone else's?

 

The rubber boot on the clutch slave is a big part of the sluggish clutch pedal. It is on the side of the bellhousing and hung out in the cold all the time. The heat from the exhaust heats it up shortly after the truck is started so the issue goes away when the truck warms up. I pulled the boot off of mine completely to verify it was the boot. Sure enough no sluggish clutch in cold weather with out it. The dirt and road grime getting into the bellhousing is enough reason for me to live with the sluggish pedal so I put the boot back on and now I don’t worry about it. The base mineral oil for DoT3 brake fluid has a low working point of -22*C. With the additives in brake fluid the low working temperature is taken down to -45*C. The working temperature range if the rubber boot is no where near that of the brake fluid in the clutch system.

Anyone ever have any issues after disabling the accumulator?

 

I have done this on other vehicles and have not had any issues. The clutch and involved components are pretty simple... not much to go wrong. Guess if you had a warranty claim transmission related, you may want to put the delay valve back in.

After the upgrade, clutch has a lot more feel and defined contact point. Much easier to accelerate quickly, shifting is smoother and faster!

 

Nope, been 2 years and I’m not easy on my truck at times. One of my favourite mods.

 

Alright. I’ve been convinced. I’ve ordered some parts.
