FWIW, there are programmable pet doors that will read a pet microchip. The door can be programmed to open for a specific pet's chip. It can also have a time based lock to prevent after hours roaming. It will let the pet in, but not out when in the Time Lock mode.

Don't pet chips operate on a different frequency than the typical common RFID

It's still not that sophisticated, better than nothing, better than GM just using a resistor I guess. Buy for a mere $300, you could just buy an obdstar x300 and I'm sure there's a toyota/tacoma physical decode tool for the physical key part for less than $50.

This kinda stuff used to be a lot harder to find and much more expensive, now it can be found anywhere. Not that I have personally done anything to anyone's vehicle, but if you're in the euro car scene, you know why you never buy a car from a russian... Shit, I have tools that will probably still work on damn near new cars, as far as keys go, odometers, etc... I have changed an odometer once, but it was on my own car, the old cluster was FUBAR, and I didn't want to have the mileage wrong (all 180k+). So I just programmed the new used one to the miles I wanted. In reality, could have made it 0 (I did by accident at first, was actually all in Russian, and that's a hard language to read), but that was my car. Fun fact 2, when buying a used car with over 100k, if the dealer reports it as TMU, even though it clearly is... there's a reason.

Both immobilizer and pet tags operate on the LF RFID frequencies (between 125 and 132 kHz). The tags don’t care about the exact frequency as it is the reader that provides the carrier and it doesn’t need to be exact. As to how data is modulated by the tag and what it means does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and there can be incompatibility issues there (there are actually four different types of pet chips in the US).

There are other RFID bands at higher frequencies but it just so happens pet and immobilizer both use the LF band.

Presumably anything unusual you can add would slowdown a thief who was actually trying to start and drive the vehicle rather than just flatbed it.

    Ah......just a thought.

Other ideas will come.....some good, some not so good, some just bad.

Yes, because the base specs more or less would be a site ID and then whatever code. But due to limitations on size, people got creative about how to "get more". So, there can be a lot of custom spec, so I can read my pets tags, but the information is useless to me, since I have no idea what to authenticate it against.

Edit: This, isn't the same, but the principal is. https://www.hidglobal.com/sites/default/files/hid-understanding_card_data_formats-wp-en.pdf

Edit 2: Security by obscurity isn't security. Which is a de-facto statement. However, I have always disagreed, but make sure you know what you're doing.
