Rather than relying on a stranger’s opinion about when to change a synthetic oil, get a kit from Blackstone Labs to test it at 5K. They’ll tell you how much life is left in it.

My truck is good to go beyond 10K running Mobile 1 (bought only when the rebate is active) but I subscribe to the simplicity of @Clearwater Bill ’s reminder system.

To change synthetic every 5K without getting it tested is $$ down the toilet and a waste of oil.

Related, because I think my buddy mentioned blackstone as well. I believe that when I had my diff and transfer case fluids changed, it was never actually done. Is Blackstone the go-to non-disputable company? Googling yields me several results, and I keep forgetting to look into it more.

Edit: To OP. 10-12k for me on Mobil fully synthetic and either OE/WIX filters. I might even push to 15 if for some reason I do (just did, last 3 weeks I've spent.... 80+ hours in my truck driving)

:rofl:This is why I can never resist a round of “when should I change my oil?” Equally entertaining is the Japanese spinoff “what kind of oil should I use?”

But, the real question is, which way should the toilet paper roll face?

Transfer cases and diffs aren’t mentioned but if you contact them about what you need, you should be good to go.

Well.... in about a week and a half, I'm gonna have a fight on my hands. This is my go-to present, it looks like you spent money and cared, but in reality, its lazy and cheap. That's a big enough resolution to work with. I need to cover up some wall hogs in my bathroom, I argue over under with my SO all the time. So guess what's about to be printed on canvas to cover up..... I use www.canvaschamp.com not a plug, I've just used them, they only fucked up once.

Zero risk as long as your engine doesn’t burnt or leak oil.

but he doesn't know if the oil breaks down or is full of metal at 5001 miles or 7499 miles. recommend test every 1000 miles between 5k and 7k. oh wait, that's more expensive and involved than just changing the oil.

I'd probably feel ok with basically anything between 5k and 7.5k. I had a friend in college who didn't know that you were supposed to change oil. his oil was good for 50k in a Supra !!

A friend of my wife's got the Porsche in the divorce. She was certain that the oil was fine until the little red light came on.

Less expensive to just change the oil.

cripes......I think the $$ savings of skipping a few oil changes is nullified by the analysis cost.

Thanks just the same. I'll stay on the 5K OCI, full Syn and WIX filter.

    Hey Knute,

i realized there is a sort of way around this, whish is what i did before I knew the Oil Change Maint light would flash at 5000 miles. When you change your oil, reset your Trip B odometer (if you use Trip A for milage per tank of gas). just check Trip B periodically and you'll see when it's at 7500 (or whatever interval you want) then it's time to change oil again.

Most people are likely checking the oil for other metals or particles being present than whether or not their oil has any life left in it.
