3.4L supercharger

I have mine velcroed under the dash by my right knee by my 2nd gas tanks fuel gauge.
This spot sucks though. It’s easy to see but you have to completely take your eyes off the road to see it.

 

Alright guys thanks for the input I ordered a spiker mount to go with my ultra gauge mount.

Now on to the bullshit. My nose cone is leaking. How difficult is it to change this out while the supercharger is still in place?

 

Nose seal is pretty easy to replace,
Getting the old one out just be careful to not nick the walls

 

Saw your thread on seal replacement. If I understand correctly the bearing is directly behind that seal so.

1. Use a small drill bit to make a divot then turn the sheet metal screws in enough to grab hold?

2. Use puller to pull seal out and then use a socket to tap the new seal (with grease) in?

Jon Bond sells seals for more than double what rolling performance offers. Wonder what the difference is…

Either way I’m mad about this. Magnum Powers rebuilt the snout and it immediately started leaking. Needless to say I won’t ever call that guy for anything.

 

You can use a body dent slide puller too to remove the seal.
Get the high temp seal from rolling performance, get 3 and have a few spares.
The seal has to go on very carefully so you don’t rip it or nick it on the shaft.
The grease is for the center shaft so on start up doesn’t burn the seal

 

With the slide hammer how do you grab a hold of the seal?


And in OEM form is there a retaining clip?

 

Yes there is a clip, there are two types that are used.
If you use a slide hammer you still have to drill a very small hole for the screw,
Probably on both sides

 

Yeah, I should have a retaining ring. I tried to look though the holes in the pulley but they’re so small it’s hard to tell much. I was just wondering if that could have been left out.

I “think” that I see one? But I can’t really tell without removing it.

Its a slow leak. And I have to go out of town next week so I’m hoping it isn’t a big deal to drive if I don’t have time to get to it. Ive been boosting around and it hasn’t seemed to make it worse? But again. It’s hard to tell.

 

Clean the old oil off if you can so you will know if it’s leaking more and make sure the supercharger oil level is correct most importantly.
Typically the oil will get sprayed up under the hood too If it’s leaking a lot.
Pulley probably has to come off to see the clip ring

 

Yeah I’ve been doing that. There’s maybe more after boosting around. I don’t know.

Ive been keeping an eye on the oil as well. Seems to be about the same as stock by sliding the L side of an Allen wrench in an turning it down to see if it touches oil.

If your running the supercharger hard when it’s hot outside without methonal the stock seal might fail from heat and pressure or has a chance of failure.
The high performance rolling performance seal is rated at 300 some degrees,
the stock is less.
I had nose leaking seal issues with my 2” pulley until I got the methonal kit installed.
Even with the 1.9 pulley I haven’t had any issues.
The methonal keeps the supercharger temperatures considerably cooler under boost, while a non methonal TRD supercharger has no way to keep the temperatures from getting out of control with a given situation of high outside temperatures and higher boost number and smaller pulley with higher supercharger rpms all creating more heat and oil pressure inside the supercharger oil area pushing against the seal

 

If you have a heat laser type temperature gun you should shot the nose to see what your temperatures are after a hard pull.

I can typically put my hand on my supercharger even after a hard pull and it’s still cool enough to keep my hand on it if I wanted too

 

No oil on the hood, I checked for that. It’s running down the bottom of the snout and down to the bottom of the flange area. Not even enough to pool anywhere. It just sticks to the surface.

It’s been pretty hot here too around 80-90 and in a black truck it’s like 120 ambient under the hood, surface temperatures are hotter. I’m just going to order some stuff, keep an eye on it and change it out if it gets worse.

 

Yeah I have a meth kit it just isn’t running. I need to redo the whole setup. Right m now it’s being cooled, to some degree, by fuel. Maybe I can redo everything this weekend.

I see that your pump is higher up than the reservoir. Ive always read that you want the pump lower. One of the reasons I never had mine in the engine bay. Just not a lot of places to put it. Ever had an issue with that?

 

Think I’m late to the party on this, but why not? I used it per the instruction manual and didn’t have any problems removing the bolts when I swapped in a new thermostat. Since it worked just fine I reinstalled with threadlocker when I put it all back together.

 

Zero problem where I have it mounted. You have to prime it when you 1st install it.
The older units probably don’t have a priming button or depending on the controller,
I have a newer controller that primes it, essentially it will purge the methonal at any time if I want.
The fuel doesn’t really do anything for cooling
I run a #4 nozzle which is a lot and keeps the supercharger very cool regardless.

or you could also install an adjustable FPR and turn up the pressure. Which is what I’m leaning toward.

 

A little vague, but Who the hell was that guy that has a 4Runner as his avatar and was selling supercharger stuff here and there.

 

At least I know there was a retaining clip installed. I may tell if it’s leaking from the shaft area or the bottom part. I assume the bottom because oil is not flung everywhere.
