Audiofrog two GB10’s 2 ohm or 4 ohm Version?

I was going to put two 10” JL W3 subwoofers in my GEN 2 Tacoma Access Cab…now that I have more money to play around with I think I am going to get 2 Audiofrog GB10 D2’s
Crutchfield told me if I am using two Audiofrog 10’s in the back that I should go with getting both 2 ohm “D2” speakers and not get the 4ohm “D4” version speakers. Apparantly this is because according to Crutchfield after going to the amp which is a JL JD1000/1 amp…ultimately having two 2 Ohm (D2) Audiofrog 10’s will allow me to push the ohms up to 4 ohms each speaker which then turns both to 2 ohms total once wired to the amp. Apparantly the Audiofrog GB10 D2 has the capability to either use 2 ohms or 4 ohms…the 4 ohm version does not have a 2 ohm setting…I guess this is why they are called 2 ohm “dual” speakers.

Is crutchfield right here by going with two 2 ohm Audiofrog 10’s and not the 4 ohm version?
I just want to get what is best for my Tacoma Access Cab…I was also told an enclosed speaker box would probably be better than a ported box for better sound.
I listen to some extremely heavy music…no rap but still the metal I listen to has strong deep lows as well…just not like you hear in rap.
Obviously I still want some hard hitting subs though…

Also the JL JD1000/1 sound like a decent amp to use for these?

Taking all the math out of it for now to simplify things…

to get a 2ohm load at the amp, you need two of the 2ohm DVC versions, so they have told you correctly.

 

Awesome just curious though…why is 2ohms pretty much the definite number of ohms Crutchfield is steering me towards rather than say 4 ohms?
They told me if I had one single speaker I maybe could go for 4 ohms…but again they have steered me towards ultimately 2ohms between the 2 subs.
I’m sure they told me but the math kinda confused me.
Is 2 ohms going to give me more loudness?
I told them I like cranking my metal hard and loud. Maybe this is why.
And again the JL JD1000/1 amp is decent? I like the lower price of this 1000 watt amp and they say it is perfect for those Audiofrogs.

I’ve been trying to decide for over a Month now on what to get and I believe I am going to go ahead and purchase these from Crutchfield later this evening…I guess I’m just asking for some reassurance:

Will these hit hard? I listen to some very hard metal…not Disturbed but more like “Meshuggah” and “SepticFlesh” which are downtuned very heavily and hit extremely hard…I really want my adrenaline pumping. I want to FEEL the bass as much as I hear them.
I do not listen to rap so it sounds like going with the GB10 D2 2ohm speakers will put a big smile on my face.

I realize I will need a decent box for this and I need to give Mr. Marv a call.


…if anyone wants to talk me out of them tell me why.

 

4 Ohms is better. Period. At 4 ohms the amplifier has way more control over the subwoofer driver, the added damping enables the amp to not just move the cone, but more importantly, stop it.

HOWEVER

“Nobody” gives a flying fuck about high fidelity in their subwoofer. Homeys just want that shit loud AF. Like all of your comments above, I don’t think you even mentioned accuracy, I just saw words like “hit, hard, loud” and that’s pretty much normal now, and the industry has come to the rescue, providing you amps that deliver power at 2 ohms or less at the expense of fidelity.

You can get amps running high power sub channels at 4 ohms but it is EXPENSIVE. Take a look at all of the monoblock amps on Crutchfield, they get that 1000W, 1500W, whatever watts actually by using a 2 ohm load or less. That’s why you can’t just assume a JD1000 will actually be 1000W, that might be its 1 ohm power output, in fact let’s look…



And there you go, 2 Ohm. You’ll find a lot of amps labeled “xx-million.1” for a model name and that’s just what it puts out at whatever minimum load rating it was designed for. I don’t buy amps like these, I want the damping, a cooler running amp, and cooler running speakers. So, that’s why I spend more and most others don’t.

YMMV, but this is why Crutchfield is recommending you go 2 ohms, to maximize your power without giving you sticker shock, knowing you’re just like all the other guys they deal with wanting subs. People like me don’t go to places like Crutchfield for advice, and they understand that.

So, if you want two woofers:

2 ohms - D2 ohm, coils wired series, drivers wired parallel to the amp.
4 ohms - D4 ohm, coils wired in series, drivers wired parallel to the amp.

Always wire coils in series instead of speakers. It turns them into essentially a single voice coil because they are mechanically bonded on the VC former.

You could parallel the coils, then series the drivers and get your same load, but speakers wired in series interact. If you push in on one driver, the electrical circuit between the two will cause the other speaker to move in the opposite direction. Your amplifier has to fight and overcome that “feedback” so wiring drivers in series should only be done out of necessity.

 

I called Mr. Marv up and told him EXACTLY what I want…power and accuracy.
He has me sold on 2 Audiofrog 12GB 12 D4’s with an ArcAudio X2 1100.1 amp.
I’d rather spend more and get what I really want.
I’ll have more than I need subwoofer wise…but I can turn that down for now and still have plenty and be more future proof for future door speaker upgrades…because I will be further upgrading now that I am addicted.
He is already getting ready to make me a box for my Tacoma as well.
Marv is the greatest right to the point and very fair prices.

I am not so sure why Crutchfield thought I was trying to go as cheap as possible because from the beginning I told them I am willing to spend more for what I really want.

I wish I would have known about Marv before I upgraded any speakers. Again I do not know why Crutchfield talked me into cheaper speakers I was asking for better audio from the get go.
I will say that I absolutely love the

Alpine ilx-W650 as it is PERFECT for my needs.
I’m happy with the Infinity Components…9630cx but I’m aware of Audiofrog and Focal now…and will be upgrading those before long and may need an upgraded amp for the front…not too sure but it’s cool…I’m still really enjoying my music and I have not even put in subs yet. but I can always upgrade in the future…and Marv is definitely the way to go.
Now I am happy.

 

Mr. Marv has already schooled me and told me that Crutchfield telling me that going to smaller 10” Subs will give me “tighter” bass is absolute nonsense. That is not how subwoofers work…also for what I want I am going to want the 12” Subs…and he could not stop talking about how wonderful the Audiofrog GB12 4D’s are…in fact how incredible Audiofrogs are period.
He even said the JL W7 is an absolute beast but that is out of my price range.

Yes I’m sticking with Mr. Marv from here on out. This coming Winter I plan on further upgrading my door speakers and Marv is the one I am going to for advice.
I love his no nonsense attitude.
For now yes I am very happy with my current Infinity setup…it was cheap and they bang for what they are. I just know these 2 12’s are going to be a little overkill compared to my door speakers and Marv even told me that…however he told me definitely get the Audiofrogs go with two 12” subs and just dial them down to match my current setup.
I honestly do not think I will have any complaints.
I guess I should think the people of this forum for recommending me to Mr. Marv.
I should have mentioned that yes I also want SQ sound very accurate not just banging hard…but both.
When you don’t know anything about car audio you don’t know…know what I mean? But heck in just 2 Months I am learning fast.
Anyone care to chime in here? This sounds awesome to me and the box he will be building me along with an amp rack was very affordable.

Amen, I drove down from Seattle to shoot the shit with him (and pick up some amazing items he made) and I learned more from him that day than months on the internet. Anyone who gets a chance to meet him, call him, etc .... do it.

 

Yes I paid him for both Audiofrogs the box and amp rack he is building me just waiting for him to build everything and ship out.

 

I have at least over 7 hours of talk time with Marv about 10% of me talking.
Marv LOVES dropping knowledge and I trust every word he tells me.
I feel like I have 2 years of Audio knowledge already from just having Marv talk to me.

It’s a hot muggy shithole here with too many assholes. I live out in the Country about 45 minutes away from New Orleans so it is not as bad. Yes Grand Isle my family had a camp there not too bad I enjoyed jet skiing there.
Now if you are referring to any good restaurants we do have the BEST seafood restaurants in New Orleans. Main reason I still live here. (Asides from being to broke to move and find a cheap place elsewhere)
