What does "start a conversation" mean vs add thread or reply to a thread? Is that kinda like a dm?

You can tap a user name and start a conversation without quotation.

It's basically a way to add only specific people to a "conversation" thread. The thread isn't posted to any of the boards, but the people involved will all be able to see the thread in their inbox if they have alerts on.

You can definitely think of it as a way to direct message somebody (or group) of people. Some people call them PMs (private/personal message) around here.

You can add an ALERT by phone to conversations to let you know when a member contacts you if you're not logged into TW

 

No worries! Some of us are younger but really dumb and some of us are older and too smart to figure out how open a pair of underpants to put them on. You'll find the whole gamut of "dumb on the internet" here. But I wouldn't really categorize TW as social media. It's really just a forum/messageboard, and that's why it is actually worth visiting.
