It may actually be a CC520; All of my notes in this thread say “CC250”, but it has been almost five years since Ryan installed it…

Aside from that bizarre white spot on top of the unit, it seems to be in okay condition…

I was able to scrap the compressor but not the fridge itself because they were closing when I arrived and the scale had already been shut down for the night; So, this piece of shit that has potentially cost me a backup camera is gonna have to stay in the back of my truck overnight!

That's just the average I get when I divide how much gas I burn by how many miles I travel; I suspect I'm getting at least 22 on the highway...

All of my Tacoma's have had weird MPG's, actually get better mileage in everyday driving than l do on a strict highway drive, go figure.

117K, bought it with 6K. Winter fuel is usually 20-21 city. I don't do highway often but when I do if I keep it at 70MPH it's 25-27. Top of my skull 5w-20 or 0w-20 synthetic blend..I'd have to check the sticker to confirm but that won't be for 2-3 weeks at least.

I'd guess perhaps if you used an Ultragauge you might see your numbers a little better than you think @PennSilverTaco

When I was like 8, my parents took me to this children’s museum in San Francisco (it was in 1997 and my dad was stationed at Moffett Field); One of the displays they had was an old TV and a small but powerful magnet. The TV was color, but it was old enough that it had dials and no remote. The sole purpose of this display, I’m guessing, was so kids wouldn’t be tempted to try out a magnet on the family TV. As I was having a blast using the magnet on the already-ruined TV, my mom gave me a stern lecture about not trying this at home, since I’d just received a giant Wham-O gorilla magnet for my birthday…

The big question: In the future, will vehicles that use R134a have to be retrofitted to R1234yf if they need a major A/C overhaul?

My truck had the evaporator core replaced in September 2018 when it developed a leak, and the system has worked great since then; However, if something else gives out in the future, will R134a be scarce by then and will I have to pay for a retrofit to the new stuff in addition to replacing the part?

No Tacoma has ever used R-12, as they were first produced in mid-1995; However, I’m pretty sure that most new vehicles use it the new stuff now. My Tacoma and my mom’s 2013 Nissan Murano both use R134a, but my dad’s 2018 GMC Yukon uses R1234yf. No independent mechanic I know is willing to service an R1234yf system because it requires expensive new equipment and training.

If it's anything like R-22, they'll recycle the 134a when old cars and AC units die out, etc and use it for repairs. If you need an R-22 HVAC unit fixed these days, they pump in recycled R-22 gas for the refill (at a much higher cost that original new r-22), but you cant buy an R-22 unit new any more since they're illegal.

I dont think 134a is illegal to manufacture though (in the US, it is in the EU), unlike R-22, so they might continue making refill kits.

You could buy entire residential central A/C units (Straight A/Cs and heat pumps) as “components” without the R-22 charge to replace failed units in existing systems for a while, but I don’t know if this is still the case.

On another note, I think R-12 offers better performance than R134a in cars and refrigerators (quite simply, it blows colder), but I have not noticed a difference between R-22 versus R410a in central A/C systems.
