As I deduce it, adding another leaf to increase the lift puts the Sumo spring farther away from the frame where it would compress under load. So it would take much more leaf spring compression to engage the Sumo spring. It's been reported that an AAL creates a stiffer resistance when added to the stock leaf pack; I don't see the Sumo spring being adequately compressed as installed because of this.

I have the 4 layer blue Sumo spring currently installed on my Off Road.

Using rear blocks instead of an AAL would keep the originally installed Sumo spring's ability to contact the frame under load; as if there was no block installed at all.

With this dealer installed lift, will BFG KO2’s in 285/70/17 on 17” TRD Pro wheels rub? Would mud flaps need to be removed?

You shouldn’t need to keep the sumo springs under load all the time as far as I’m aware. The whole point of them is to reduce the jarring bump of the bump stops. Not having them loaded is ideal, that means your leaf spring are working properly.

My understanding is no it won't rub with the TRD 4runner SEMA wheels. A good alignment will move the tire forward to keep from hitting the frame mount. I'm no expert, but this is what I'm reading. I run the 5100s on the 4th setting, 1 in rear block with the SEMA wheels on 265/70/17 with factory mud guards and no issue. So we tried my friends trd SEMA wheels and he has BFGs 285/70/17s and I drove all day on them and no rub anywhere, and we tried to flex it and still nothing. I may move up to 285s but don't want the headaches with that size.

Mostly just performance issues and MPG decrease. It’s a significantly larger/heavier tire than stock and the stock gearing is not setup well to handle a tire of this size. People run this size all the time (I’m planning to as well), just don’t expect it to drive like a stock truck.

A kdmax tune will handle that, but calibration issues, a light sl rated tire is not so heavy and decreased gas mileage, cutting the cab mounts. Too much headache but it may be for some folks.

I agree. The Sumo springs I installed are not used constantly for load. I only installed them for the occasional heavy load that I would carry in my bed. Having them as a less forgiving bump stop is a plus.

27% off the kit at my local dealer is very tempting, but the quoted price for installation isn't tempting at all. I'd like to just do the install myself, but then I remember that the major draw here is the warranty.

What does the warranty cover? What is provided in writing concerning warranty by Toyota?

Especially if that needle bearing goes out or starts vibrating from day one after install like it did for @16TacomaSport...

I guess if you had problem with cv's, needle bearings or driveline vibrations it would all be covered. Do the install yourself and any problems with driveline they will point blame at change of ride height, install etc...

Theres a balance of paying $700 to install at a dealer or keep the $700 to pay for any potential problems down the road...

So got my rear 1" blocks in. So truck has about 1/2" of rake now. I am done till I need new tires.
Well until I get around to putting the ECGS in come fall or so. I want to see how it feels now the 1" rear is done. A quick ride around the block and I didn't notice the vibration as much as I did before the rear was done.

There in itself lies the problem "I guess"

Clarity could be resolved if someone just posts what Toyota provides in writing for actual warranty
for their high buck profit margin lift kit...

Maybe they don't provide any written warranty for the TRD Suspenion upgrade (like they do with the purchase of a new Tacoma when new)??

When you raise the back up it puts more weight on the front end and the lift amount actually will decrease on the front suspension which most likely minimized the vibration you experienced prior to lifting the back end up.

If you would have know in advance you could have checked the inner CV boots on each front axle to see if they (the fins) were rubbing prior and then again after the rear lift to know. You can look right now and see if they are slightly worn at the ends of the fins on the inner cv boots with a high power light to get an idea of what transpired prior to the install of the 1" block.

From the original Toyota press release... https://pressroom.toyota.com/step-up-new-tacoma-trd-lift-kit-now-available/

"The Tacoma TRD Lift Kit comes backed by the same warranty as all TRD accessories, which includes a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty on parts if it is installed prior to or at the time of the sale, or a 1-year, 12,000-mile warranty on parts if installed afterward."

Ergo, if anything goes wrong with your truck or any of the parts fitted then they are covered by warranty. (unless you go off-roading :)

Well at normal speeds the vibration is the same. So it didn't reduce it. Still isn't a huge deal so I will love with it now till I feel like swapping out the bushing. I'd say for anyone don't let that hinder you if you want to lift it

The parts themselves are warrantied, not the after effects of them being installed on the truck.

The way see it is the rest of the truck is under warranty, so if Toyota installed something and that caused a problem then it's their problem...
