Oil pan covered in oil

So I was under the truck yesterday and noticed my oil pan looked like it was coated with oil. Seems like there might be a leak... any ideas? If its leaking is that covered under warranty?

 

I think it would depend on the source of the leak. Have you checked the oil level to see if it's gone down?

 

oil level shows full on the dipstick, oil looks clean and was changed 3000 miles ago. I dont recall spilling any, and if I did I dont think it would coat the oil pan.

 

Mine had the same thing at around 1000 miles. Wasn't leaking enough to notice on the dipstick, but definate leak. After wiping and checking everyday, I saw it was leaking from the pan gasket seal. Took it in under warranty. Since it was a warraty repair, they had to do it "by the book", so they put some dye in my oil and told me to come back in a few days. The UV dye confirmed it was the #2 pan gasket, and they replaced it under warranty.

I hate that a brand new truck was leaking oil, but I can understand that sometimes you get contamination when making that gasket. Easy fix and hasn't leaked since.

 

Might wanna check the drain plug before you get too worried.Did you use a washer on the drain plug?

 

Yes I checked the drain plug the plug is at the very bottom of pan, it is coating the pan thst has all the hex bolts. The pan is above the drain pan. And its not the tranny

 

That's the #1 Pan. (yes, we have two oil pans) Are you under warranty? take it to the dealer and have them put the dye in.

If not, give it a good cleanup and watch it every day and see where it's coming from. Betcah a dollar it's the gasket.

 

Mine is the timing cover. 4 cyl. They've tried to reseal it 3 times so far without success. Next time I'm angling for new timing cover since they have probably torqued it until it isn't quite flat anymore OR just replace the whole motor with new nonleaking one. I just think it chimpy bullshit to glue the motor together with rtv and not have actual gasket in a bunch of places that could really use them. The oil pan and timing cover need a fucking gasket so not to generate frequent maintenance and mess like this. Just like auto tranny pans that never stay dry after you break the seal on them. Gimme gaskets and rtv sealant shit. Have already told the dealership we aren't playin this shit every few months until the drivetrain warranty expires then have me paying for it. It won't matter at this point because they have unsuccessfully been chasing this since 63k or so. It's been going on since I got it at 48k certified preowned. They just blew me off for 1st 15k of owning it while they replaced all the other seals on the motor and rear axle as they failed. This one is mostly seepage and not crazy mess or I'd be back every week. Usually just starts to drip about time for oil change. Before that it just wets the block but doesn't drip after wiping off excess. Running 5-30w syn and toyota filter so no bullshit came come from that either...........OP good luck with yours.

thanks for the help! I hav an appointment set for tomorrow. Im guessing since it is the motor it should be covered under 60,000 mile drivetrain warranty

 

You'll find out it doesn't have gaskets, it has a bead of black rtv stuff.....at least my 4 cyl does, can't speak to the v6.

 

yep yep, that's what I meant, sorry, the liquid gasket crap. They kept my truck all day to let it "set up"
