The Prius was bought new and the hybrid batteries have the warranty. The wife was pre-owned and was not a CPO nor was I offered an extended warranty, so she came as is.

Sounds like OP might have tried the ol' half gallon in the throttle body trick.

That was pretty good, but when I received the recent fuel pump recall notice, I took the wife into the dealership and kept the truck at home as its fuel pump was working just fine.....

WTF just happened here on TW. Only 7 pages of witty humor. (especially fond of the wife comments)*says as he changes password and clears history*
For the record if OP dude ran out of fuel and truck doesn't' start where in the hell does he get this miracle 1/2 imperial gallon of fuel to dump in the throttle body.... DUH; I mean even I have a spare fuel pump in the glove box, but fuel...hell no.

The trick is to manually ignite it, can't trust the plugs after running them dry to fire without a little coaxing

Lost in the sauce, happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, this private's sauce was a simple ketchup

Just to keep this thread going, I'd like to share my new method of getting funds for modifications approved by my wife.
Start with "Honey, I ran out of gas. I put gas in it and now it won't start. The mechanic says it's going to be $60 labor or a case of beer and it might need a TRD Pro grill. Don't you think the case of beer would be cheaper? That saving would go a long way toward the cost of the grill."

That could backfire. If I show up with flowers for no apparent reason the first words out of her mouth are "ok, what do you want?" or "Oh chit what did you do now?"
