Toyota dealership scratched wheels. What would you do?

You gave the shop a chance to make it right and they did.

 

Exactly right, the service manager was a great guy and he definitely made sure I was happy. He did offer to have the wheels fixed and I declined. I got my cash and left happy. Can’t ask for more.

 

Damn! $267 to mount, balance and alignment. Seems a little steep. How much was the Alignment?

It is. Had an alignment done on the wife's Prius a month ago and it was $99. You do get a schnazzy computer printout though

 

FWIW, I've had a couple nice experiences with my local Toyota shop.

The first was with the Parts Dept. Very helpful to dig up and identify the correct part. Sparkplugs, Denso copper, cost was around $3/ea. Autozone insisted that iridium was the correct plug at near $7/ea. They've help id more odd parts, specifically body fasteners.

The 2nd was a tire/TPMS swap and balance onto my set of restored OEM wheels. The Service Manager said the balance cost was $60+. I grumbled a little about the cost for balance seemed high. Told them to go ahead with the work. Took a seat in the waiting room, after a few minutes the Service Manager came to me and said he was waving the balance charge.

I'll be back to the dealer. So far, they have been straight forward. So far, they have me as a returning customer.

 

Demand new wheels. Have them call you when wheels are in and ready to be installed. Take to dealership and have them do it while you what. Most dealerships work off an appointment system now anyway. Should take no more than an hour. Watch Toyota porn while you wait. Good Luck!

Not reading the whole thread but this happened to me maybe a yr or so ago. It was only a rotation and Majority lug locations on every wheel were scratched and chipped. Like the guy was just jabbing, missing lugs completely or jabbing/missing while pressing trigger and spinning. I didn’t notice until the following day when I washed the truck. Took it back the following week talked with the service manager, took pics and after a couple weeks got me 4 new wheels and put his “top” guy on it (supposedly the only one that has the special lug sockets with the protected sleeve).

I replaced the replacements with t4r trail take offs a couple months later and sold the warranty replacements as basically new takeoffs/brand new with only a couple hundred miles on them

 

I haven’t worked in one BUT I’ve bought plenty in my lifetime and literally every shop I walk into had a huge sign behind the register and on the invoice when you sign it stating this…

 

Dealership replaced my son's wheels on his old 2015 because of the scratches. F the check, I would definitely be getting new rims and not fixing them. You can not beat the factory finish.

 

The jackass tech at Americas Tire cracked one of the side skirts on my wife’s durango. The refunded us the cost of the tires for that. Shit like this happens frequently unfortunately.

 

No question that they do, but I can promise you that it doesn't stop people from demanding new wheels, and when a reputable shop does damage, they won't point to the sign. That isn't to say that there are some shops that would deny responsibility, but it isn't common practice. I have had some wheels that I told the customer that we would do our best, but if they got scratched, it was on them. Those are rare situations usually when someone wants to do something dumb and you can't tell them no. Like the guy that had line-xed his wheels.

 

A mediocre attorney (doesn't even have to be a good one) can get around those easily. Signs, written releases, etc. don't relieve the vendor of liability in the case of negligence (i.e., not taking reasonable precautions to avoid the damage). And as Sungod stated, a reputable shop will try and make sure the customer is satisfied regardless, otherwise they won't be in business for long.

 

I just spent $1,000 on new pro rims to go on my new truck with 700 miles on it. I am pretty particular with my stuff and keep things looking new as long as possible. I found a local Napa Tire/Auto Center that has 4.9/5 google reviews and made a point to the Manager that I am concerned with scratching both the new ones going on and the new ones coming off. He assured me they take great care in the mounting and have a plastic part that goes along the edge of the rim so no metal to metal contact. They did fantastic-not a scratch. $106 including tax to move all 4 stock tires and TPMS to the new rims and balance and reinstall on the truck.
