Hey all. I have a friend that wants to take a road trip to the Grand Canyon with a camper trailer. This trailer has a dry weight of 2665 and, per my specs, my SR has a tow capacity of 3500. Would that be too much weight for a 1,000 mile trip?

I don't have a tow package and I don't want to stress my truck out. Would you do it?

I had a 2019 SR and wouldn't do it. Not enough engine.

    I wouldn’t recommend it.
The hitch weight is already over your max. (Max is 350 with the 2.7 and 3,500 capacity.)
Plus you haven’t accounted for anything you put inside the camper.
You also need to account for what’s in the truck.

You’re asking a lot from the truck.

V6 or I4? Manual or Automatic? Are you sure you don’t have the tow package? How much other payload including passengers?

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Answering these questions provides much better data for offering advice.
    <100 mile R/T - I'd do it. 1,000 mile R/T I'd be very apprehensive.

    All 2020 Taco's with a 3,500 towing capacity are 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engines w/automatic.

Yeah, that's right. I don't suppose I can upgrade a tow package either, can I? I didn't even think about that before I bought it. It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway because COVID limited my options severely.

I have a 19 SR 2.7 4x4. I added trailer hitch and lights. This enclosed trailer weighs approx 2200 pounds loaded. Plus about another 400 pounds in/on the bed between tools/camper shell. I tow like this about 100 miles a week, 60% interstate 40% city. I have no issues. It depends on how much extra weight you’re going to add to the trailer/truck. But I would have no problems towing 2500-3000 pounds 1000 miles if it were me personally. Towing scares a lot of people in here for some reason.

They probably want to tow more than 2,200 lbs 40 miles a week in town ;-)

I think with a hitch and a brake controller you could do it but it won't be comfortable.

I think if you look for something else to camp in like a teardrop camper or pop up that would be lighter and have less wind resistance you would be ok with the I4 engine.
I tow a Pop camper with mine but I have a v6 SR5 and it seems to do really well. It still doesn't match the low end torque my Liberty CRD turbo diesel had but it's got no problem keeping up with 65-70 mph highway speeds.

I think that would be a real sweet spot for towing with a V6 Taco. The reduction in wind drag and weight is super significant. Maybe even a hard side A frame folding camper ?? Got me thinking...

Yeah the A-liners are really nice. They are heavier than a soft side camper but the v6 should be able to handle it well. Plus if you are out west in bear territory you need a hard side to go in some parks. The lower wind drag with help. Even those teardrops like tag and to some extent the taller t@b because they are lower and or more rounded

I tow my Aliner Expedition (the big one) all over the place. It was a little hairy at times maneuvering it without the 2 lo mod, but now that I have that there are 0 worries.

Has anything been done to your tuck? I've cut and hauled better than a cord of hard wood many times over three hundred miles. Thats 4000 lbs with out the weight of the trailer. I do have heavy leafs in my truck though. It will drag but my enginge is still running strong at 180k
