Going to ask a car question about a non Tacoma here, maybe someone knows.
My dads been trying to fix a 2004 6c mustang. So, the first drive of any day the car will run great, can drive it around all day and if he does not turn it off it runs fine. If it’s turned off and waits like 10 min and tries to restart it, it runs like crap. The idle is al over the place, sounds terrible and can’t Be driven.
He’s replaced all the fuel components, ignition, coils, MAF, PCV and O2 sensors and gutted the catalytic converters. He tried replacing the computer but the car would not even start after it. He showed me the list of things he’s done and it’s a really long list. He had it diagnosed but the computer didn’t say anything was wrong.
Anyone have any ideas?

 

How long does he have to wait between starts for it to run normally?

He said the motor just needs be be cold. I was thinking wire bundle might be an issue getting to hot or chaffing

 

That's what I'm thinking. You said he replaced the coils, but did he check the wiring harnesses connected to the rest of the engine? Maybe disconnect and use a multimeter to check continuity after running for a while?

Another possibility; does he know how clean his bores are? If running the engine heats up pistons and the block enough for slight expansion, and there's enough build-up or low enough tolerance in the cylinders, he may be getting extra friction in a cylinder which would affect the timing. While I would initially suspect he should see the same results from just running it long enough, the force and motion of the already-running engine may be enough to overcome the friction, whereas a warm start has too much friction or interference to allow the engine to build the RPM necessary to overcome that friction. I would recommend having his cylinders scoped, but that's just my thoughts.

 

Thanks I’ll let him know. The car only has like 60k miles on it. But then again it’s a Ford…
