Re-installing Overload Leafs

Hey guys, I need some help. I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro and installed the Icon 1.5” AAL in the rear and the 1.5” Westcott Designs lift in the front- but I want to put the overloads back in. Do the overloads need to go in a certain direction? They seem to be the same length on each side from the center pin hole, but I just wanted to confirm before I install them. Just wasn’t sure if there’s a specific direction they have to go in. Posted on some other FB groups and can’t seem to get an answer. Might be a dumb question but figured I’d ask to be safe. Thanks!

 

I dont know for sure, but I had the same question when I put mine back in. Since they're the same i just put them in and I havent had any issues

 

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I measured from the axle and each side of the overload measures about 12 5/16” so it shouldn’t matter which direction they go in?

 

I’ll tell you right now, if you do out then back on, grind them rivets down on the icon leafs that hold the retainers on. Or enjoy squeak city!

 

Why are you putting the overloads back in.
Just wondering because I’m about to purchase the icon AAL and I was not sure if I was going to take the overload out or keep it in.

 

I put them back in because the AAL only gave me about an inch of lift, not the full 1.5”. But, I decided to remove the overload and throw in the headstrong 1/2” shim instead. Works much better and has no interference with the AAL brackets, and gives me the full 1.5” of lift

I’m in the same boat as you. I had the icon 3-leaf Aal installed and now want to put the overload back in. Since I didn’t do the aal install myself, I would appreciate any insights on how to install the headstrong shims. I’ll probably just order those and will install myself in the driveway. Did you also order the optional center pins or did you not need them? Appreciate any info you can share!

Yes I also ordered the centerpins as well just to be safe. I had a local shop do mine and they used them, but the shim goes between the AAL and the axle just line the overload did

Should i do factory overload if im adding a bed rack?

 

If you are going to put in the factory overload I would just put in the 1/2” HD shim instead, so that way the factory overload doesn’t interfere with the AAL brackets. The overload and HD shim are both 1/2”

 

So no extra work and no effect on suspension capabilities?

 

Not at all. The shim is exactly like having the overload, but better because it won’t interfere with your AAL brackets. It gives you the same amount of height that the overloads would

 

Thanks for googling that lmao. I want to make sure I’m buying or looking at the right stuff because I’ve now bought at least one wrong item. I’m kind of new at this stuff and the last thing i want is to buy the wrong stuff.

I hear ya. I was in the same boat, I was running my overloads with the AAL and didn’t like the way it was set up, so decided to go with the shim. So far so good. Wish I knew this before hand, because I’ve had to pay for 2 alignments now. Fml

 

Is alignment really super necessary for a 1/2” rear lift?
