Fitting 35’s with minimal trimming NOW ADDING LONG TRAVEL AND 934 CV’s

I bent my 3/16 steel ones all to shit like they're gonna make good gusset material I wasn't too concerned.

Yes I will to get the same strength that I'll achieve I'd have to jump to 5/16 or thicker as an unsupported skid like ALL the current ones that are made. Or gusset the shit out of it and it weigh a ton. The skinning with uhmwpe also will add some rigidity. I don't need to go huge as far as tubing size goes for the bracing and that has a lot more strength and bend resistance to weight ratio than flat plate unsupported does.

 

He’s talking about these. We wheeled yesterday, he attached the skid to the thin hole you can see on that bracket.

 

These? Those get junked with the majority of aftermarket skids. My skid reuses where those bolted, as do most others.

 

Oh yeah those kill ground clearance compared to aftermarket skids on the market already.

 

Interesting, I didn’t know that. Those will definitely get ditched then.

 

The huge dent right on the bend of my 1/4" skid says that you're correct: thinner material and smaller surface areas. I'll bet we could bend/dent 5/16 too

 

Yep easily. I've seen double 3/16 and gusseted ones dented.

 

Why worry about it? Learn to build them and replace when needed. Some of us are running trucks that are over 5,000lbs. That’s what happens when 5,000lbs hits an immovable object.

 

I’d say most semi built Tacoma’s are over 5,000 lbs. I thought I was a relatively light and minimal build compared to others yet I’m 5230 lbs. It’s amazing how fast weight adds up.

 

Yup. Last time I crossed a scale I was on 33’s and came in at 5180. Now on 37’s with heavy wheels and a lot more armor. Guessing somewhere around 5500 now. That is not in any way a light vehicle. Probably close to trophy truck weight honestly.

I just feel like whining about skid plates bending on a hard hit is pointless. They are meant to be sacrificial and protect the important stuff.

Either way. A skid is meant to be sacrificial. They bend. It’s just part of it. I’m sure some guys out there could destroy a 1/2” AR500 skid too.

 

How far forward do you have yours pushed? Did you have to tub still? How's the tie rod to coil clearance?

 

I bent my skid after a hard hit because it wasn’t designed properly by me. I wanted to improve the design by asking other, more experienced people’s input. They may be sacrificial, but I’m not trying to build one every time I wheel either.

 

So umm yea about them inners?

 

Just some more we need to do.

 

I have mine pushed the full 1” and yes I still had lots of tubbing. Clearances are all fine. They designed it to work with stock stuff.
