2006 Taco making funny noise

Hello all, this is my first post so hopefully it'll make sense. Just want to say this site is awesome. Soo much great information. I have a question and wonder if anyone else has run into this. I have a 2006 double cab 4X4 Taco. I just hit the 40,000 mile mark. Around 3,000 miles ago, I developed a funny noise when the truck is in the cruising gear. You can really notice it around 45-50 mph. The dealership said it was the cats and they replaced them. The noise is still there. It almost sounds like a vibration but I can't tell if it's the motor, the trans or the exhaust. It doesn't make the noise when the truck is setting at idle (in gear or out). Thanks in advance for the help.

 

I know this was an old post but my taco is making the same noise around 45-50 and even at lower speeds when the rpms are right around 1500. Did you ever get it fixed?

 

Can you explain more or maybe better (if it is possible) get a video?

Yes I finally found the problem. The air intake tube that connects to the passenger side fire wall had come slightly loose which caused a vibration at just the right rpms. It only took a year or so to figure out. I took the tube off then drove the truck to see if the noise went away and poof it was gone. Hope this helps.

 

Glad you found out what the problem was. When the dealer replaced the cats was the cost covered under the extended warrenty??

 

X2 on the intake rubbing on the fender well. Corected it by taping some nylon straping around the tubing and reinstalling it with a snugger fit.

 

Thats not why mine was making the noise, i found out its the exhaust pipe where it goes from the cats to the single pipe that attachment was kind of loose because of the springs being worn and not keeping it as tight anymore, i tried fixing it last night but dont have any other springs so i put a shaft collar clamp-on on the bolts so the bolt didn't bottom out on the connection and leave the little space, it still made the noise a little bit so i just need to make it tighter today and if it still moves i'm going to weld the son-bitch! haha

 

Mine had the same issue. I started hearing the noise and took it to one Dealer. They couldn't find the problem... tightened the exhaust... but the noise was still there. I decided to take my truck to a different dealer and they knew exactly what the issue was. Funny how you not all the dealers have the information.

 

What are you guys talking abou , i don't get it at all ,, i have a 2006 Model ( Pre-runner 2WD , with 42560 miles ) and some people have told me that my engines runs loud , in other words is too noisy , some people told me that is the hydraulic lifters and other told me that it may be the exhaust pipe .....



Any help with this matter would be appreciated .....

 

When the dealer replaced the cats it was covered by the extended warranty. I only had to pay a deductible. My dealer always wants to replace stuff and I don't always think things are actually bad, think their just trying to make more cash on the service call. They tried telling me that the only way to fix the noise was to replace the intake tube, which supposedly has been redesigned because of this noise issue. I decided to tighten the thing up was way cheaper.
