Problems after putting the truck in 4x4

After driving my 2008 tacoma on a bumpy, snowy dirt road and after putting it in 4x4 for probably the first time the truck has completely f'd up on me.

The low tire pressure light is on and it stays on even though the tires are inflated to 40psi, but it was doing that before the truck went into 4x4. The 4wd light on the dash won't go off and the 4low light flashes and beeps even though the dial is in 2wd. The steering begins to get jerky when the wheels are turned sharply, even when they aren't turned all the way. When starting to move, the truck acts like the tires are slipping like it's on ice and jerks forward even on dry pavement. When driving above about 30 km/h with the engine above 2000rpm I start to hear a whirring noise which becomes much louder as the speed increases. This noise doesn't happen if the truck is coasting in neutral at speed or when the engine is revved with the truck stopped in park/neutral.

Anybody else experience similar problems with their trucks? I'll be bringing the truck in this week for service but any information beforehand would be appreciated.Thanks.

yep....i agree!! and be sure to check the spare tire also...........it has a sensor too!

The whirring is the transfer case- the truck is in 4low, its completely normal when in low. the tire pressure light is probably due to the spare being low as others have said. to get the truck out of 4low stop, put the transmission in neutral with your foot on the brake and turn the dial to 4hi. then put it back in gear after you hear a click or clunk or after the 4-low light goes out. then creep forward a little and turn the dial back to 2hi and it should come out of 4wd

 

my 05 AC cab did this once...

I had to put the truck in gear.. (6 sp) shut off the truck.
then turn the truck to 4hi start the truck move it a bit..
then turn it to 2wd move a bit... Then it kicked out of 4wd.

Wow, thank you all for the quick responses! I tried what Johnson8537 suggested an it worked perfectly. The low tire pressure light is still on, but that is probably just the spare tire.

Does anyone read the manual?

 

You would think after spending your hard earned money that people would pick up the manual and read some of the important stuff. However this site has a plethora of information and in most cases is better than the manual.

 

Have you tried reversing, like 10 feet or so? usually un-binds anything with the T-case. It should almost always "kick-out of 4wd" after reversing.

 

I tried that with mine as well... and the only thing that worked was the process i posted above.

 

Just another reason to have a manual x-fer case...no mickey mouse BS.

Comming from learning on my Jeep, I had a little difficulity learning how mine worked also, cause when you start plugging wires into what once was a very simple & reliable device (handle), things tend to not act like they once did.
