This is a fun one I am still trying to work through. I had my Truck at Carmax yesterday to sell it for more than I paid for it new in 2019. (I love this truck but I need more towing capacity) and they rejected the offer they gave me as the odometer does not jive with what Toyota service records say. At my last oil change a couple of months the Tech entered 20,000 miles. At the time there was closer to 18,000 miles on the tuck. As such my truck currently has 19,250 miles on it and they won't buy it.

Any one had this issue with Toyota misrepresenting the miles on the truck at the time of service. Is this a quick fix? I have talked to my sales guy, parts manager and have multiple message to the service manager. So far no luck...but it has only been 24 hours.

If I can get this fixed I can sell my truck for the total amount originally promised...but i am frustrated.

The service guy was lazy or was told a wrong mileage. Just drive it until it’s over 20,000 and then go back. By the time you get this sorted it will be over 20k anyway.

    Classic data entered issue.

The tech probably had to enter 20,000 so that he got paid for the 20k service :annoyed: I’m pretty sure there is no way to roll back modern odometers.

Or go back to the dealer and get a odometer certification from them.

See what Toyota will give you for the truck. I keep getting cards in the mail from the Toyota here saying they will give me 25 percent over the value.

Have you considered trading it in instead of selling it to carmax?

The I-10 Toyota in Palm Desert Ca. is where the offers are coming from. That's where I had my truck in for the blower motor recall a few years back. I still can't believe California won't let you renew the registration, at 500 bucks, because a heater/AC blower motor has a recall on it; side note.

Is this even possible to roll the odometer back on a vehicle from this century? I thought that was impossible on a digital odometer but I don’t know for sure. I woulda let the stupidity of the situation take ahold of me and become a complete sarcastic ass to them.

“Do ya think if I had the ability to roll the odometer back, I only woulda rolled it back 750 miles?? Oh yeah I’ll get a way better offer with 750 less miles on it, that’ll get me the big bucks! Or is it possible some toyota tech entered the wrong mileage at my last service check? Don’t you think it’s just a little odd that I got the truck serviced at EXACTLY 20,000 miles? Yeah no one ever rounds numbers in the service industry. Ok then ya caught me, I’m the infamous roller-backer of odometers coming for a car near you, better call the cops!

At this point the mileage is not the issue, it's that the deal is void due to suspicion of fraud. "Oooops, I made a mistake" probably won't be enough.

Carmax will not want to be exposed to a claim from their buyer that the mileage was altered. Some bullet proof documentation might satisfy them, but realistically a Carmax employee is being asked to make the call, it's easier to pass and buy the other trucks being offered.

The service record at Toyota Corp. is most likely is a controlled document and editing or correcting it by the dealership may not be allowed.

Now you know why CarFax is of dubious value; it gleans from the same type of data bases. GIGO for you old time computer folks.

Another lesson learned is always check your paperwork before leaving the property. Especially a dealership.

But, OP, take a nice trip this weekend to a 400 mile away destination, enjoy your 'farewell ride' and sell it next Tuesday. All that $ you're gonna roll in will cover the B&B and some fancy grub for you and your SO.

All the more reason to just bring it back after 20k miles. Sounds like carmax did the right thing but really who rolls a odometer back less than 2k miles?

The question is where did CarMax learn about this mileage error?

If this "error" is on say a CarFax report I would be more concerned as that "error" will remain on the CarFax report long after you go past 20k miles and will affect a future sale by scaring off potential buyers. CarFax does have a way to correct reporting errors but I suspect it is not easy.

Having owned low mileage vehicles this is not that rare of a situation, oil change techs and smog techs are the worst at entering the wrong mileage as they are not used to low mileage vehicles or are in such a rush they fat finger the keyboard.

Find out where CarMax learned of the incorrect mileage and you can go from there on getting it corrected.

Clearly a data entry issue; and small really considering the age and mileage. Have you tried Carvana? I just purchased a 2021 4Rnner OR for my wife. Went to trade in a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Carmax offered me about 25% over the dealer trade-in. I still was not satisfied with Carmax so I tried Carvana. Their offer was 15% above Carmax. I then tried Shift and their offer was an additional 15% above Carvana. The online platforms were really easy. I ultimately sold the car to Shift. Good luck.

On the surface that seems like it would work. And maybe it will.

But I wouldn't be surprised that Carmax has the VIN tagged, worth a shot I guess.
