DMV Vehicle inspection.

So im finally having to register my vehicle in California from New Hampshire. I paid the reg and everything but I have to get it inspected. My tacoma has aftermarket UCAs, shocks, skids, rock sliders, wheels/tires with NO drivetrain mods. Is the vehicle inspection going to be a problem for me tomorrow?

 

Probably not. If they complain about anything, they may call out oversized tires if they stick out from the fender a ton past the fender flares, but I doubt you're that unlucky. Otherwise just make sure anything under the hood that isn't stock has a CARB label (i.e. aftermarket intake).

 

Ok cool, I think ill be fine then. I got nothing aftermarket under the hood other than a stereo system connected to the battery. My tires are slightly past the fenders but nothing outrageous.

 

Get covers for off road lights if you have any.

 

Good idea. Totally forgot my aftermarket fogs they arent SAE. I still got the stock ones I can throw on tonight real quick.

 

If you have beyond stock tint on your front two windows they may gig you for that. They're not enforcing it much anymore out here but if you're a vehicle from out of state they might.

 

I got 35% on the front. I think im going to get popped for that. Just roll down the windows all the way and hope they dont roll them up lol.

 

I purchased a car from AZ. I just had to do VIN inspection which was cake, and weight inspection which was just roll up to any DMV approved scale.

 

Purchased my Tacoma in AZ, had to get it weighed and smogged in addition to the vehicle inspection.

My timing couldn't have been worse. It was bought just before covid, and by the time I got the AZ title DMV was shut down. I was given terrible advice by DMV to use their online system for an out of state registration. I drove around for six months with expired AZ temporary plates before I received CA plates.

 

When I did my car all they did was verify the VIN matched the Title.

 

So i did the inspection. I went back inside to finally complete the registration process and get my temp tags. Apparently all trucks in California are considered commercial vehicles and I need to get it weighed before the hey give me my tags I already paid for. Such BS.

Yeah, State of California is pretty quirky...Taxes on everything, different and interesting people, silly petty laws, some of the best mix of food culture, great state for entertainment...and there's In-N-Out...

 

Same for mine. Just checked the VIN matched the Title.

+1, I did have to smog the truck. I do not recall if I had to bring the smog cert to the inspection or if I was able to get the inspection done and have the smog submitted as an IOU.

If you are a AAA member highly recommend doing all of the registration/paperwork at the local AAA office. They will know what the necessary order is on the smog paperwork.

 

I know im moving back here surprisingly. My mom has a medical problem and I needed to come back. I love California the state but hate like 50% of its laws.

 

Use that to your advantage, you can use the yellow loading zones with your commercial plates.;-)
