Hello, my 2017 Toyota Tacoma SR5 RWD is making a wooing noise when accelerating from a stop. I took a video that captures the noise briefly. It doesn’t happen consistently, but has been happening more consistently lately. Any ideas?

    Welcome to TW!

Does the issue occur at high speeds as well? I’d check for any TSB’s for your vin. Some of the first third gens were notorious for diff howl but that has since been sorted. Sounds like a bearing or something. Do you grease your driveline when you change the oil? 4x4’s have 5 grease fittings, unsure of 2WD but I’d say 2-3. Im hoping someone else with more experience than I do, chimes in.

Kind of sounds like a dry universal joint to me. It’s at the most load under acceleration from a stop. Had a similar noise in my previous truck, I lubed the u joints and the noise went away.

The noises stops at about 20 mph. Not very mechanically inclined, I have all maintenance completed at the dealer. I took it to the dealer to help diagnose, they couldn’t recreate the noise that day. Has just over 50k miles. I’ll check any TSB for the VIN, assumed the dealer would check for those. Thanks for the reply!

    Anytime stump town buddy!

Most likely the VIN TSB’s do check out so no need to worry there. I think the main issue was low fluid from factory and not defective parts but don’t quote me. I’d try your drive shaft zerk fittings first. I find it unlikely a Toyota tech would hit these (from my experience). Very easy to do, only trick is getting under there. Plenty of tutorials on YouTube though. I recommend red and tacky grease with a pistol style level grease gun. Pump until you see new grease. Clean off the zerk prior to pumping and you’ll have less issues filling since that valve in the center won’t be caked prior with grease and road grime.

This will let you lookup any recalls, unsure of TSB. I think NHTSA provides one but it’s through a paywall as well.
