I'm in Virginia and mine is nearly $2000/year so California doesn't sound so bad.

Well the good thing is that here in SoCal we spend zero dollars on umbrellas and rain boots.

I always figured the California haters are actually jealous. Right now it’s hot, humid and stormy east of the Rockies. It was an enjoyable 80 here.

In the winter it’s wet, cold and miserable in most of the country. Here 50 is cold and at most we need a light jacket. Not four layers.

I can go to the beach, the mountains or the desert in one afternoon.

@ConantTaco If you have a permanent camper shell and use it for habitation, submit the form, pass the inspection, and get standard plates. The information I’m providing is for people that are considering trying to convert their registration from commercial to standard for the benefit of reducing their registration fees. I’m letting them know what’s required and that the savings are marginal. If this information is useless to you then please ignore my post.

I'm not going to debate you point-for-point since I'm happy to have fewer complainers like you in my area, however you are very wrong with some of your 'facts'. Here are a few examples:

In some parts of So.Cal. crime is bad, just like it is in some parts of the PNW. Gas is expensive, but if you shop around you can find good prices. I drive 500-1,000 miles a week and have never paid $5 a gallon, not even for Diesel.
We have no water rationing or 'Water Police' in my area (Orange County); my sprinklers run every-other day for as long as I want them to. I regularly wash my trucks and motorcycles in my driveway.
I work in the Power industry and have heard of no hydro-electric plants being shut-down because of low water levels. Could that happen? Maybe but it's not likely.
I actually like Rolling Black-out's-That's major OT for me. In the past 3.5 years I've yet to have one in my neighborhood. Most of the ones I respond to are in poorer areas for whatever reason.
No homeless people in my area either. Sure we have them in my town, but our PD does a good job of keeping them under control.

Bottom-line, So.Cal. is not the dumpster fire you describe. Are parts of it rough? Of course, but that's true of any metropolitan area and is one of the reasons I largely avoid the LA area. I've worked and lived in Phoenix, Hawaii and Houston. All three of those have area's which no one wants to be in. In my industry the wages in So.Cal. are among the highest on the west coast, which affords me the luxury of living in a nicer part of So.Cal. Someday I may move to a quieter area of the country, or I may not. From my house I can be at the beach in 45 mins, to a cabin my family owns in the mountains in two hours or out to the Mojave desert in two hours. I like having that convenience and take advantage of visiting those places at least once a month (my GF lives at the beach so I'm actually at the beach a couple of times a week).

But please, stay away, we could use fewer 'Chicken Little's' around here

I do wish our standard-issue license plates were a bit more creative. Does anyone else remember the setting sun plate we used to have in California back in the mid '80's? Now unless you want to pay a bit more for a custom plate (which I do on my two classic VW's) all you get is a standard white plate with blue numbers and letters and a web address for the DMV at the bottom. Boring!

It’s a license plate who cares what it looks like. I’ve had yellow & black, black & yellow, blue and yellow, white & blue can’t say any was better than the other.

I spend a week every year in Utah. Now that's a state which does license plates right!

Ive visited Cali. I think it's a nice place depends on where you visit. I was in the bay area and some of northern California in in 2006 before the homeless problem was as bad as i hear and see from news that it's become.

I will say it really was a nice place. I did pick up that it was expensive to live there are there were likely lots of laws and regulations. I considered it a nice place to visit but not a place I'd want to live. But then my own state is slowly getting worse too with taxes fees and regulations.

Sorry, I think I paid a couple hundred for 3 years. Its the county tax that's 4.57% every year. What's crazy is the amount of McLarens, Ferraris, etc that I see here. I can't imagine what these people are paying.

My buddy had an f-450, and got a similar bill charged for registration. I think your put in a different category if your vehicle is rated to exceed a gvw of 12,500 lbs. Your no longer considered to be light duty.

Gee thanks. No need to feel sorry, I’m right where I want to be! And you are the only person that thinks I suck. There is a reason California is the most populated state.

My work F-550 is registered out of state on Apportioned Tags (I occasionally drive it out of state and being on Apportioned tags makes going in and out of Arizona easier/cheaper). If it were registered in Ca between tags, weight fees and everything else the fee would be close to $5K! Although it would make for a nice write-off.

Most of the haters are moving out of California. Unfortunately some of them come back. They seem to be the worst kind. Regardless it is expensive. I can afford it so I stay. I've been to 100 other worst places.
