Tire sealant: Any consensus on the latest greatest? I've been using a homemade cocktail since the days when Stans was really the only option. With brand new tires I was wondering if I should consider an alternative before gunking them up. Mainly concerned with longevity and bead sealing I guess. I don't seem to have many puncture issues here (knocks on wood).

Orange endurance and have zero complaints. Truthfully that’s all I’ve ever used. But I’ve yet to see a reason to try anything else :notsure:

I'm really bad about sealant. I top off Stans maybe twice a year. Its not uncommon for me to pull a tire and its bone dry.

We are supposed to add sealant periodically?

Uh, is there a good link for maintaining modern tubeless MTB tires............well and carbon rims..........to change a tire without messing up an $800 rim?? :help::bananadead::)

technically yes, I think regular orange seal is like once a month or something like that.

I have used Stans, Orange Seal and Panaracer Seal Smart. The panaracer seal smart has some huge chunks in it but it is nearly impossible to put it in through the stem (which is my preferred method). I am still using the regular Orange Seal right now.

    Yeah.
I just use Stan's and give it a refresh a couple times a year. I'm not a weight weenie and it is cheap, so I use plenty. I've never had any luck going through the stem, so I always remove the tire and clean things up, remove the latex coral ball that sometimes forms. Stan's has always worked to seal small punctures (not so well on 2" sidewall gashes on a brand-new $70 tire), so no reason to try something different. And you know it is latex-based, so if Stan's is not available in a pinch you can just use another latex-based sealant.

For protecting the rim, I use a plastic trash can to support the wheel and push down on opposite sides, rotate, do again, until the bead breaks. I have a Pedro's DH tire lever that I wrap some electrical tape around to pry up the bead, and then use plastic tire levers to work it loose from there. Once you get about a foot of the bead off (~30cm for our northern neighbors), the rest can usually be done by hand. Getting it back on is about the same in reverse. Then, you get to re-seat the bead! Different tire/rim combos can make this a challenge, especially if you don't have a charger pump or compressor. I have a compressor, and even that sometimes takes a lot of patience. I like the Bontrager system with the plastic liner, seems to make it much easier.

Just regular Orange Seal, refreshed about every 6 months and/or completely flushed and refilled once a year. I tried the Finish Line sealant as a test one year and it stayed liquid longer than OS, but I don't really get flats often enough to make it worth swapping over to. It was more "goopy" than OS, and with larger chunks, but I like using the syringe>valve method for filling and emptying the tires, and the Finish Line stuff was too viscous for that.

Only downside to OS is when you forget to clean it out of a set of tires for a season or two and end up with this monstrosity... (still weighed less than a tube)

Yeah I’m usually about a once a year clean and reapply. Although I haven’t touched mine since spring 2020 at this point I can only assume they are more or less dry but holding air pretty well and I haven’t had any punctures so….

I just called my insurance agent and had a rider clause specifically for bikes. $1000 deductible
Almost had to use it (recovered the bike stolen from my garage) and it was super easy. It was a pre-owned bike and the insurance company didn't ask any questions. Just took the deductible off the replacement cost check (More than I paid for the bike in first place)
