Has anyone made a thread about towing on 35s? I couldn’t find any and I know there’s a lot of people with 35s on Tacoma’s now.

    I drive a 2016 Trd off-road with a 3” lift on 35s.

I Plan to get regeared to 5.29s before I do any sort of towing

for those of you who have experience with towing on 35s, or even 34s or 33s. How was your experience? What would you do different next time? How much weight? Did the bigger tires really make it struggle when your towing? How bad is the Mpg? What are some things you must have? Anything I should really look out for? How much did it sag in the rear?

I’ve been thinking about getting a travel trailer around 3000 or 3500lbs. of course I’ll be getting a weight distribution hitch and a trailer brake controller as well

I’ve heard all about towing with Tacoma’s, but never heard what it’s like with 35s

    please share you’re experiences!
    Any help is appreciated

Subscribed, I am curious on others experience on this. I am not a towing expert, just trying to learn more from what the OP has posted.

I am interested in knowing how the transmission is affected if at all. Larger tires/rotating mass and if the regear will help or if the trans cooler needs to be modded. Also interested to see if the suspension affects the payload/hitch weight. OP mentions a 3000/3500 trailer so the hitch weight should not be too much. I wonder what the rpm's will be on 35's on some steep grades.

I have 33’s 3” lift and armor and tow. Not same size but even with stock size tires I don’t find the Tacoma to tow well. I towed my Harley to bike week from mass and got 9-10 mpg and truck stayed screaming at 4k rpms + for most of the ride. If I had to tow more than once/twice a year I’d get a full size. You’ll be better once you regear, but probs still scream going down the road

Sir, not trying to be a dick here, but you are asking how is it towing with 35s and how are the MPGs? I don’t tow heavy and don’t run 35s but I can tell you for sure that it will be absolutely miserable experience while getting horrible fuel mileage.

Tacoma’s are not primarily designed as tow vehicles. Add 35s and a 3” lift, yikes...

Extra weight and big tires are going to increase braking distance, make sure youve got trailer brakes.

Considering my tacoma can barely maintain 65/70 in top gear with the tiny tires... lift + wheels/tires You'd basically be driving a 4 speed at best if not a 3 speed. I would highly recommend a re-gear

Get your truck weighed. That is the first step to understand what you have left for Cargo Capacity (CC), GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and the GCVWR (Gross COMBINED Vehicle Weight Rating).

The closer you are to hitting or exceeding these limits will have a big impact on handling, MPG and all factors.

Nothing you can add to "increase the capacity". These add-ons only help to manage the load and add to the overall weight to push closer to the limits.

I'm on 33's and regared to 5.29. I tow a 3k dry rpod and when loaded it weights close to 3,800lbs fully loaded. It Does fine. I average about 10mpg towing and yes you need to wind this engine up to tow. My 33's are heavy and are like 1lb shy of some 35's. It will do it fine, but I wouldn't really want to tow a much heavier trailer.

here’s a pic of my heaviest haul. Fully loaded trailer and about 1,000lbs in the bed of the truck with bikes, generator, and gear. During this trip i Towed from the CA bay area up into the sierra's near downieville. Highway 49 starts to get pretty windy and this setup did just fine. I was very suprised actually. I'm considering going up to 35's with this setup and am sure that it will handle it.

A lot of people will tell you no don't do it, but have not done it themselves. If you do it, you'll understand. It's not the most conventional route to get it done but it's not as bad as a lot make it seem to be. This little truck continues to impress me.

    I absolutely agree,
    I wouldn’t even consider towing anything with 35s really….
I guess my real question is, how is towing with 35s and a 5.29 regear?

anyone on here with 35s and 5.29 gears that’s towed before?

I’m sure it will be better with the 5.29s, but still. I was more referring to the stock gearing with 35s and 3” lift.

    Good luck!

I run 285/75/16s and definitely need 5.29s asap.

    Appreciate your feedback sir!
I can’t imagine how slow I would be towing on 35s with no regear!
I’d look dumber than someone driving a ridge line

Heres my take on your question.

The tacoma in stock form is not a tow pig. It never has been and it never will be.

So lets lift it, toss on some 35's and stuff 5.29's in it. Its still a tacoma with a final drive that closely resembles stock that still isnt very good for towing.

B/c of 35's on each corner and i assume after market wheels youve now made it heavier.

Will it tow 3500lbs? Im sure it will.
Will it be enjoyable to tow 3500lbs? Im sure it wont.
