Yeah I recommend trying the premium octane version before you give a full review of the vr tune . I'm running premium version and I don't see any of these symptoms you report of regular octane

I always run ECT on when hitting the highway and ECT off around town because I like how it drives that way. If you scroll back through my posts you can see the mpg over our 2400 mile trip from WA to UT and back.

The file you’re on is an experimental future update. ECT is finalized on that tune while normal is still under development.

New to this tuning stuff and interested in running the VR tune. I just bought VF Tuner but haven't installed yet, researching so I understand what to do but so much to look through.

I'll be installing 35s very soon (have them sitting here) but won't be able to regear for another month or 2. I saw your comment about there not being a tune for this size with stock gears. Can I run the 34" size with stock gears tune and be OK for now?

For a few weeks it’ll be okay but the speedometer may be incorrect. Shift points will also not be 100% as programmed.

If you’d like, I’d just make you a 35 3.90 file for the time being and you can have it and your new gear ratio files ready to go once installed.

That'd be awesome to have the extra file if you don't mind! I know it won't be ideal but should still be better than with stock tune. I thought the speedo was off anyways unless you get the hypertech (or similar?) calibrator?
Can I purchase on your website (with 35" and 5.29) and then request the additional file?

The speed is determined at the wheel by the truck. Mine is still accurate and I’m running 33s.

If you order on the website and get the file you’ll need after a regear, just add in the purchase notes that you need the 3.90 file temporarily.

I’ll email you a custom built 3.90 file for the time being.

    *** Information ***

Valley Sport has now entered the second phase of testing. We will be running it through various vehicles to identify any issues or sticking points. In house testing has proven an increase to fuel economy, torque, and a more cable-like throttle feel. Please remember this tune will be solely a sport oriented tune, it will have a more sensitive pedal response than VR as a result.

    -------------

Updates to Valley Runner have been progressing. We will be finishing 04C20 soon and also including 04C21 as part of the 2021 update. Afterwards we will begin updating 2020 trucks and so on.

These files will officially be released as v2.1 and update info will be posted here as well as on our website in the updates tab.

    -------------

Toyota 4Runner tune files are in their final stage of testing. Those who have a 4R or know someone who does, please feel free to reach out should you want a copy of the tune while in final testing. This will be the same as with all final stage testing, a severely discounted price for the tune file with the requirement of providing your feedback direct to me or my staff through email/direct message/or our contact form on valleytune.com

What this means is that we are also scratching on the edge of having a 2nd Gen Tacoma tune available. We may have a few test trucks lined up for that in the near future!

The 4.0l engine doesn't need much help, however it does have room for improvement. So far testing has shown that we can shift the powerband easier on these vehicles, provide a significant change to pedal feel, and improve fuel economy through the use of aggressive valve timing edits. In the same regions that our in house 2016 Tacoma would previously get 18-19mpg, the 4Runners are able to net 19.5-21mpg. Factors such as weather, weight, pavement quality, etc. all still play a role in testing, however over 4 tanks the average mpgs have been promising.

As always, thank you for your support and patience as we complete updates and product development.

Questions pertaining to the updates VFTuner is making should be directed to their forums or contact link, however I will gladly answer questions or help my Installers understand what is required moving forward. Valley Tuning and our network of independent installers should remain intact for the most part.

So I got busy with life and haven't had the chance to do my tune. I guess I'm a bit confused now, because it looks like OVTune did an update now, and there was also a TSB update as well since I ordered. Since OVTune is on 1.3 now, the instructions on their website do not seem updated, so they don't line up with how the software looks now. Also, I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro that I bought in April, do I need to do any updates to the truck as well before I install the tune?

Thanks in advance for the help, just really worried about bricking my truck. I took a road trip last week though, and the downshifting to 4th in the hills has me eager to tune to see if it helps.

The steps to flash a truck in the software remains unchanged.

If you have 04C20 as your current ECU ID, then you’re able to flash the file you already have.

If you’re on 04C21 let me know. I’m finalizing the files for these ECU IDs now

Thank you for the response, I will check tonight and see what my ECU ID is. If I have 04C20, I do not have to do any TSB update either?

Correct, 04C20 is technically the old ECU ID for your truck. However you do not need to update unless you want to.

Let me know if you’re on 04C21, I had someone who’s truck was built in April come to me with C21 already on there. If yours was built before March of 2021 you might be fine.

Perfect, I appreciate it and I will check tonight. Also, do you recommend reseting learning values after I install the tune?

If you are coming from a stock tune you won’t need to.

If you’re coming from another company’s tune, I would monitor for any weird shifting or behaviors. If this occurs then reset them.

Typically we don’t need this, but some trucks coming from different tunes behavior weird until a reset.

I’m running your tune on 04c20, but want to update to 04c21. Will the update files appear in my downloads on your site or do I have to request them?

Looking forward to the 4Runner tune! I'm in the process of moving across the country so I can't test, but will definitely buy the tune when finished.
