I wonder how this effects a piggyback ecu like a 7th injector kit

If it’s smog legal, it has a carb Sticker, all good. If not, disconnect it.

    Yeah, they’re not smog legal.
I’ve read of people passing smog with them connected/hidden.
Probably best bet would be to remove it like you said.

Edit: what I’d like to know is if the smog obd2 connection will detect a piggyback ecu on a 1st gen. The stock ecu’s software isn’t modified at all. It’s just tricked.

I’m going to guess “yes”. I do think the piggy back just reads and sets to match.

The thing is, most manufacturers already know when the car is tuned. Even when you revert to stock, how many times the ECU has been flashed, what the checksum is for the current software is.

No doubt CARB has learned all the tricks.

Removing or even just unplugging and going back to stock wiring on piggyback is enough. Don't do it day of test, You may have to wait and run back through the setup checks in ECU. I'd remove and hide any evidence of 7th. shouldn't take too long and not worth hassle of getting flagged.

I got flagged for no sticker under hood 4 years ago for s/c and they ask me about it every time so its in the paperwork that you failed before and they look closer for anything shiny.

On the ECU My understanding is there is a Tune ID that is added in at factory. Some ECU tuners copy over that ID so in theory the OBDII info isn't changed. I don't know if there is something more advanced added in last year but I doubt it. This regulation has always existed AFAIK not sure why it's news now.

The legislation may have existed but they have only recently decided to enforce it.

Everybody thinks of OBDII as some standard and to a degree, it is. Only a
Small portion is accessible by your average reader. However, the manufacturers portion is far more complex and allows for a lot more features and information. For example, if Toyota connects, they can query portions of the ECU-the tuners have reverse engineered this to do their thing. There’s even diagnostic functions like Tech Stream uses. Except the piggy back stuff (unless it modifies the ECU).

When the ECU is written by a third party, it’s possible tags are left around. It’s also possible the ECU can only be written x times. In the later case, what ever is left behind can be accessed. Software has checksums. Those can be checked. They could also run a diagnostic where the result is known (like moving an exhaust valve).

I’m guessing there will be more than a few mistakes made where people are screwed.

Yeah, this sounds right. CARB has enough data collected they can probably pick out outliers.

All the articles I’ve read today say as of
July 19, 2021 smog will detect ecu flashes. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t know before I suppose.

The 1st gen 5vzfe ecu can’t be reflashed or tuned.
No one has ever been able to crack it.
Hence piggyback is the only option.

I have 20 months until my next smog check anyway. The plan is remove the 7th well before then..like 1-2 months. My evap monitor takes forever to be ready. It’s not required for smog but I still want it ready.

This past spring my evap monitor took around 2,000 miles to be ready.
It passed smog with the evap not ready but I’d rather just have all the monitors ready for next time.

In today’s environment? Depends on the round.

Anything $0.33 and under for 7.62x39 I am buying.

I have thousands of rounds of .223, so that’s not in my sights.

Whatever 9 I can find, I usually just buy unless it’s absolutely outrageous.

Are you running a piggyback? It’s one of the main reason I haven’t wanted to add a supercharger to my truck. CA takes all the fun out of it and I have no idea how to set up a 7th injector haha

Yeah, I just installed it about 3 weeks ago too.
I posted in the supercharger thread over in the 1st gen forum too.
Edit: setting it up was pretty easy. It took a few hours but I would say it was easy.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
I am heading to Medford this weekend... I might be able to stop by a store and see what they have in stock/how much it is if I have time.

Anyone know if the meet at Denio's will have vendors selling stuff, aside from the giveaways?
