I have seen someone write they can pull a 26’ boat no problem, but what about a 28’ boat? I have a 17 trd sport, v 6 automatic transmission and it’s a four door with the shorter bed. Just wanted to hear people’s thoughts. I have not towed anything with it yet and it has 44000 miles on it. Towing package came with the truck, and I bought it bran new.
    Thanks.

28' foot that weighs what? How wide and tall? how many axle trailer? how far you towing it? Do you need a brake controller, or your running surge brakes?

Just a few questions that might help people answer.

I am waiting for the owner to reply. I am finding on line the trailer is dual axle and weighs 975 lbs and the boat weighs 6667 lbs.

Max tow rating on a Tacoma is 6800 pounds when properly equipped. 7642 pounds is going to be well over that max, and that's before putting any other cargo in the boat.

Is it the Flipper 900ST by chance? I found that 28' boat weighs 6667 lbs... WITHOUT the engines.

I think the 6800 lb tow rating only applies in Florida where the max elevation is 345 feet above sea level. Here in New Mexico anyone who believes the Tacoma tow rating usually trades for a Tundra.

Not saying I'd want to tow anything near the max, just saying that that boat is WAY OVER max. I don't think towing it should even remotely be considered. A slippery boat ramp and no more truck. And a million other bad things could happen :(

In truth. What you tow does not matter.

The issue is the GCVWR of the combined weight of truck + mods + cargo + loaded trailer is what matters.

Most Tacomas will have a GCVWR around 11,000 lbs. This includes EVERYTHING.

People are part of the EVERYTHING.

Many posters neglect to understand how dense people are. It dosen't take long for 2 adults to blow over 500 lbs.

    Welcome to TW.

    +1, don’t.

Could you move it in your driveway? Sure. Would it be a miserable tow? Yes, and over weight and over the payload limits.

My truck (2006) payload (people, stuff) is 1,200lb. I have a topper (200lb), armor/skids (240lb) and another 60lb (or more) plus in shovel/air compressor and recovery stuff that is in truck. That leaves my truck a whopping 700lb for people and cargo.

Your tongue weight alone (assume 10% of boat + trailer) is 765lb. Zero people and outta payload.

You can find your trucks specific payload on a sticker in the drivers door jamb.

I picked up the dunk tank for the annual block party with my new 2021 Sport. Didn’t even notice it back there for the 12 mile drive. Maybe because it weighs less than 500lbs.
