I'm a 63-year-old RN set to retire in about three years, when I aim to hit the road full-time. I was a single dad for a long time. My daughter just had a baby. I don't know why, but, man, I love being called Grandpa. I keep reading about folks who don't know what to do with themselves after retirement, come to be depressed about it, and soon pass away. I just don't understand it. Hell, I'd retire right now if I could do it. I can hardly wait. The day after I hit my sixty-six years and eight months, I'm outta here! Done! Done and down the road....-- In the meantime, though, I'm preparing for it. I work four nights a week in a busy hospital unit. I use the remaining three nights to run around in my 4Runner, camp out, occasionally crash at cheap hotels along the California coast, and read and learn what other folks are doing on the road. I left home when I was fifteen and never went back. I talked with my dad once more, many years later. He said, "I've just begun to learn how to live, and it's time to die." Truth, come late, is still truth.

    Be safe.

Welcome to TW Will and more power to ya with retirement coming soon! I retired way early compaired to most and used to work at a hospital as well. Worked in an ACE unit for only 1 year (elderly care at the end of their life) and everyone one of those old timers said the same thing in one way or another when they knew their time was up. "I wish I had worked less and spent more time with my family". I refer to that daily and consider it the best advice I was never given. All in all welcome and congratulations on becoming a grandparent!

I'm thinking of maybe keeping my hands in very, very, very part-time doing some volunteer hospice work afterward. Yep, old folks know a thing or two. That said, the youngins know a thing or two, too! ;)

Think anyone will notice that I have a 4Runner but joined the Tacoma group as well? Hope they don't kick me out. I'm thinkin' I can learn stuff from the Tacoma people as well as from folks in the 4Runner group. Big respect for both.

Thanks for your kind words. One year doing EOL care for old folks is like doing two years in an ICU or or three in an ED.

    Be safe.

I always think of the good old "Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a shit" quote from Happy Gilmore when folks talk about Tacoma vs 4Runner. All in all do what makes you joyful and remember...spend all your money you can't take it with you in the end!
