It was the same with 2nd gen. What are you expecting with a regear?

the 2nd gen does not use engine rpm to estimate vehicle speed.

    Neither does the 3G

Your top speed is limited by the maximum RPM the engine will safely turn in your tallest gear. Been this way since the Model T.

When you change your gear ratio, you change the speed at which that safe RPM is reached.

Heck. In my 2nd gen I’ve gone 100mph with 285s now I’m wondering exactly how fast I can go. Time for a test drive.

So you're telling me that 83 MPH is max speed with 5.29s, what RPM is the engine at when it's "limited" by the rev limiter? That just seems like a poor design from an overall gearing perspective.

The truck itself is just an ugly looking catfish, and having to see the crazy threads that get started in the 3rd gen section on this forum :D

Wait for the total revamped 4th gen, it should have a really good engine option, the Dynamic Force 3.5L longstroke V6 (totally new assembly) which should make good low end torque for towing and better overall usable HP unlike the car engine in there now, hopefully a new 10 speed asin trans, and better gearing, and Toyota needs to address the rear diff whine its not acceptable in any way in a new vehicle.

Are you saying that 2800 rpm is the fastest the engine can safely turn in 6th gear? Why would the engine be able to safely turn 6000+rpm in gears 1 - 5, but not in gear 6?

I don’t think you understand how gearing works.

The same peak/max engine RPM is reached in 6th, but the wheels will not be turning as fast.

Remember when we used to hang out over at Ridgeline World? You still rocking that 1st gen with the canopy? I’m still mad that your mom wouldn’t let your paint it lavender.

it sounds like Toyota didn’t do enough engineering to determine what speed you’re at for a given gear. Why would it limit out on RPM at 2800 RPM in overdrive but none of the other gears. It’s too smart for its own good, best to stick to the KISS method.

Ok the Tacoma treats speed the same as every other modern car. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sends a signal giving the speed you are going based off of the RPM of the TAILSHAFT of the transmission. Which is why you still read a speed even if you are in neutral rolling down the road. It’s been done this way since basically forever with mechanical speedometer cables. Modern cars just use angry electrical pixies instead.

When you change your rear gears (to a larger number). The rpm of the tailshaft increases to relative to the ratio of the gear change. 5.29/3.909=1.35 rpm multiplier from stock (tailshaft rpm), therefore your top speed drops from 113mph to 83.5mph (113/1.35) because the Tacoma still thinks it’s going 113mph at 83.5 mph and turns on that pesky SPEED limiter by cutting the engine power (this is not a rev limiter).

The engine doesn’t care about any of this. The 6th gear overdrive would be 178mph at the REV limiter with 5.29s (but your speedometer would read 241mph.)

you fix this issue with a speedometer inline speedometer recalibration and/or a change in the tune to recalibrate shift points too.
On my classics I swap out a gear in the “sensor” when I change my rear end ratios so my speedometer works right.

Thanks, that makes sense I think I had the wrong RPM in mind. Verbiage here indicated engine rpm which would not be same as driveshaft unless your at a 1:1 gear ratio in the trans. My taco did same thing when I regeared to 4.56, the Speedo was way off. I guess I never drive it fast enough to hit the speed limiter. Putting bigger tires on fixed that for me though and I’m back to stock ratio.

    Check build thread!
Yes, there's a system that cuts fuel at high speed. 187kph in my testing (in Mexico, duh) and the truck cuts the fuel supply off and won't go quicker, even tho imo it feels like it has more to give.

Makes sense. So there are two systems. The max-rpm limiter is probably what’s affecting guys who regear and then try to hit (former) top speed.
