Remote Starter issues

So I had a remote starter installed from a local place today that come highly recommend. Well the remote start works fine but when you start with the remote the airbag light, abs light, 4x4 light and a couple others light up on the dash. When you put the key in and turn to on they all go out except the airbag light that stays on. I also noticed that the heater fan does not come on until you insert the key. This total defeats the purpose of have the remote start since they inside will not be heating up. Anyway, I plan to contact the installer on Friday but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this.

Sounds like they missed putting power to an ignition wire. Sometimes one wire will power the engine and another powers other systems like the heat. If they even slightly knew what they were doing they would have tested the functions before returning the truck to you. I would be pissed. But it should be an easy fix.

 

This might make you really mad, but take the lower part of the dash off and see what kind of a mess they made from your wiring.

...I was going to get some one else to install my security system + remote start, but this story has me thinking I should do it myself.

 

Defenitly pissed thats an understatement! Now I have to wast time taking it back to them. I am guessing its an easy fix too but still a pain in the ass!

The one thing I do not like to work with in a car is the electrical system (short of installing a radio or speakers) so I opted to pay to have the remote start installed.

 

I want to get a remote start installed as well but at a loss as to where to go....was also thinking of new speakers to be pushed by a small amp for increase volume.

I completely understand. The other reason that I am looking to do my own install - I have heard of installers breaking into the cars that they install on because they know how to. My truck is going to be booby trapped as much as I can.


BTW - which alarm/start system did you go with?

 

the 2nd gen trucks have an additional ignition or starter wire (i don't remember which) that need to be powered on with the remote start. you may also need to get the computer checked out by the dealer to turn off the airbag light. make sure the place that installed it will pay for that.

i was an installer for over 15 years and never would have thought of stealing from customers. everyone i have ever worked with would say the same thing. you will just need to find a reputable shop to install for you and you will not have any problems.

 

I went to this place becuase a coworker recomended them and they installed a bypass for the chip key rather than hard wiring a key. I dont have an extra key to use. I should have used the guys that installed my wifes 2 years ago. Hers works just fine but again they wanted me to give up an extra key.

I had the AstroStart RS-613 installed. It came to $338 with tax.

 

So, I take it that your truck already had a security system...

 

I am not pointing any fingers here, and I don't know anyone personally that was hit by this. I just heard stories. I have personally seen radio installs that were bad, but I have no experience with alarms. A little background on me: I am one of those overly paranoid guys that doesn't like the idea of some one else working on my truck (especially the electrical system).

To make matters worse, I do not know of anyone here in San Antonio that has had an alarm system installed by some one else. My boss and two of my coworkers have installed their own. Both of them are the ones that told me the horror stories about some one else installing them.


Not trying to hi-jack the thread here or anything, but I am curious... I was planning on installing the Viper 5601 1 way alarm system with Remote Start myself. What do you think of this system?

 

The truck did not have an alarm it only had the stock keyless entry system and the chip key start disable system. The system I had installed today is just the remote starter and the keyfob also operates the door locks. They did get that part working right as the locks now lock/unlock no matter if the truck is running or the doors are open.

The airbag light does not stay on if you start the truck with the key, only whith the remote start does it stay on.

I also noticed they did not install a kill switch for when you open the hood.

I plan to go back and bitch at them on Friday! I think I took it in the for the wrong day right before a holiday. The installer was probably rushing to get done for the day or something.

 

the only alarms or remote starts that i will ever use would be vipers or anything made by directed electronics. they hold patents on almost every aspect of the vehicle security world and it doesn't hurt that they offer a lifetime warranty on their products.

Do you have any experience with the 5601?

 

Well I called the shop this morning and they said to bring it by. I dropped it off and within an hour he called and said it was all set. They forgot to hookup the 2nd ignition wire like one of you guys said. Now it works great! The guy applogized a few times and handled the problem very well. Defenitly renewed my confidence in his shop.
