2001 v6 5-speed. I got a check engine light about two days ago for code p0440. I replaced the gas cap with a Stant from oreilys and used my obd scanner to clear the code. So far I have driven it about 170 miles or so over a period of two days and I still have not got the check engine light to come back. But when I check for codes the evap system still hasn’t did a full drive cycle. It still comes up as the evap test has not been completed yet. I’ve done all the drive cycles and only with the tank 3/4 to 1/4 full. Does it usually take this long to reset? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

It can be tricky to get monitors to run sometimes, here's the OE drive pattern for all the monitors if that helps.

They can sometime be a royal pain sometimes some of my tests take over a 1000 miles after numerous drive cycle attempts.

    Good luck

Out of curiosity, did you get an actual EVAP test prior to replacing the cap?

Myself go with the cheap fix first why spend more money if you don`t need to.

If that fails to fix things then trouble shoot as needed.

I guess it just depends on the cheapest fix. In some cases though I definitely agree. You can justify it by saying "a new one isn't going to hurt and I'll probably need it eventually anyway." But it's easy to fall down the rabbit hole and keep doing that and eventually all you've done is throw parts at it. Sometimes it works out though.

Granted it only works on a few things like fuel caps and radiator caps

I did it on my last truck as well with an EVAP purge solenoid. Neither that or the gas cap solved the problem.

you did see where they tell you there must be a "cold soak" and that this has to happen 2 times?

Update: I spent all day yesterday just driving the truck and I couldnt get the EVAP system to test. Everytime after I drove the truck I checked the codes with my OBD scanner and it wouldnt test. So thanks to the info that @Dm93 sent I got it to actually test a cycle and the code came right back, P0440. So if anyone wants to know the "DRIVE PATTERN NO. 5: EVAP Monitor" worked for me. So now that I know the cap didnt fix it I have to start figuring it out.

P0440 is a Large Leak, I'd start by checking all EVAP hoses, canister, and filler neck for cracks or visible leaks.
If you cant find anything you will probably need someone with a smoke machine and scanner to find it.

Well guess what? The code went away. Not sure how or why but its no longer coming up on the OBD scan tool. Ill update if it comes back.
