When you change your rear gears (to a larger number). The rpm of the tailshaft increases to relative to the ratio of the gear change. 5.29/3.909=1.35 rpm multiplier from stock (tailshaft rpm), therefore your top speed drops from 113mph to 83.5mph (113/1.35) because the Tacoma still thinks it’s going 113mph at 83.5 mph and turns on that pesky SPEED limiter by cutting the engine power

Stolen from another post but no, it's not rpms. To top out 6th with 5.29s on stocks via rpm you'd need to be going near as makes no difference 160mph.

Back when I was into tuning Fords, they were limited at 110mph. The short bed regular cab 5.0s could do 145mph without it, so it was quite the popular mod to delete it.

Yeah I don’t claim any expertise. Just what I read in the 5.29 thread back when I was considering my regear. Quite a few guys saying they hit rev limit on 5.29s at upper freeway speeds, then a tonne of talk about tuning the rev limit out using OV Tune. I dunno. Just what is said.

I understand how gears work. That is why I am able to calculate that the engine rpm will be 2800 at the speed limiter when you regear to 5.29s with stock tires. The rev limiter is above 6,000 rpm.

My mistake to claim it calculated vehicle speed off of engine rpm. But, as you imply, the transmission tailshaft and engine rpm (for a given gear) increase at the same ratio.
