All I hear about them is how unreliable they are.

My gf's dad has a works edition mini. Sounds bitchin. Looks pretty cool too

I am fishing for information, from people with turbo experience, so posting here.

I live in the hills of upstate NY, and the VFTuner Turbo Kit that I am waiting for, I believe includes wrapping the manifold, turbo and down-pipe. Concern is that with our high humidity all summer, and salted roads with humidity all winter; Insulating wrap may dramatically reduce the life of the pipes. I think they are all 304, which helps, but 304 does rust, this is why 319 is preferred for hardware near an ocean. I tend to keep my vehicles for 10+years.

Makes me wonder if I should plan on taking the time to make metal heat shields for all this, instead of wrapping? Though I do not think shields will be as effective at keeping the heat in the pipes.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with wrapping pipes in these climates?

What do car manufacturers do on turbo cars?

A really popular and effective option would be having the pipes cerakoted, which will act as an insulator and rust preventative in one.

Cerakote and there is some ceramic type that bakes on like powder coat that is supposed to be good, too.

I agree with these guys. Ceramic coating would be coating would be the best vet. Then you. Then you could also rap it for additional for additional thermal insulation.

    A thing or two...
+1 for what the other guys said about ceramic coating.

Also, heat shields won't do anything for keeping heat in the pipes. Heat shields keep heat off other things.

Thank you all @BananaMan @Brake Weight @Torspd and @buyobuyo Reading up on Cerocote and Swaintech. The Swaintech is thicker, and probably the way to go if I decide not to wrap it, though only available in white and is more expensive.

Mat at OVTune, confirmed that the header and down-pipe are both 304ss, so that helps. He also said he did not think rust will be an issue, but he does not recommend wrapping the header (for lack of room) or the down-pipe. Unclear if not wrapping down-pipe is due to my climate or universally.

I will seriously consider Swaintech for the Manifold, and turbo, maybe the down-pipe too, and then add heat shields to help protect surroundings. Looking at other sites, it seems wrap use in my climate is a serious corrosion problem. The problems found do not address 304ss, but seems better safe than sorry, when underwater, I've seen 304 start rusting in only a few weeks. Under-hood heat can be mitigated in other ways, or add wrap later.

BTW @buyobuyo, liking your motto; I say similar, regularly.

    Thanks all!

Dont use header wrap. I wrapped my manifold and cause moisture to build up caused extreme corrosion. It didnt help that my timing was retarded extremely. Cerakote is a great option plus they have high temp colors.

I didn't wrap my manifolds with the OVTune TT kit, but I did wrap the proximal parts of the downpipes because of their proximity to various cables and wires and was needing wire loom/circular heat shielding for so many spots that I needed to maximize use of material (and I'd bought quite a bit too).

It really does. That is what I like about the video I captured of the owner driving. As he kept blipping the throttle. I could hear the response, but couldn't tell how it actually felt with regard to throttle input. You get to hear it though.

Then when I drove, the dots were all connected. Throttle equalled diesel like spool response.

What is really fascinating to me, is that there is no discerning difference between the exhaust only, and the vent to atmosphere wastegate dump tube. They blend together as if tied together.

I thought I would hear that wastegate scream. It was pretty quiet. Makes me want to slide around in the dirt with my truck instead of being at work.

That's a whole lotta spool! I still don't like the sound of a v6, but it definitely sounds proper for a desert "hopper"
