Someone in here may be able to help. It’s fabrication/welding related.

I’m building a new spare tire carrier with a slide out drawer system I got. Issue is, box is to big so can’t do it how I originally planned. New plan is box against the cab and spare against the tail gate. Box slides toward the tailgate so to get inside the box, the spare would have to be moved every time.

solution I thought of with some others help was to put the spare on a mount and hinges and with the tailgate open have it rotate up towards the tailgate. I don’t need it to go up 90 degrees but something in between 45 and 90 would be nice.

issue I run into is I want to use a set of struts to hold it up and assist lift but I don’t have a good place to mount them. Would mounting the struts at an angle off the same tube as the hinge work? Diagram below

and anyone know of any struts that can lift 110 plus pounds?ive never done anything with struts so don’t even know if how I drew it if it’ll lift.

    color code is
orange is the cross brace between the bed braces with hinges welded to it
    Blue is hinges.
Red is base for the tire
    Green is struts.

Use this calculator to help determine the force needed. I use to have a lid I built on my m416 trailer with a lid and RTT back in the day. I ended up having (2) 175lb force gas struts todo the job.

Built a rack for 4x8 sheets of steel. 15 degree angle worked out well.

The tape measures are extended to 48". Gives about 6" of hand clearance between the full size 48" sheets.

I used 5" casters rated for 1800lbs and some scrap 1" tubing pieced together. Bottom rails are 2" angle.

I may use the center for some tubing storage. I already have wall racks for that though.

Do you have anymore tie braces than the one toward the top on the ends? If not, you need some at the bottom:thumbsup:

why not just have a carrier that sits above the drawer system but is set lower in the bed? That would save weight and eliminate moving parts that could seize, brake, or otherwise fail.

Yeah, I know it might need some more strength before I load it up much. I even thought I might need some "wheelie bars" if I only load one side.

I was planning to connect the uprights at the top, basically making a handle on each end, and possibly make some tubing rack storage in the center area. I was mainly wanting to pass along the 15 degree angle tip for anybody thinking about building a rack.

I guess I should have said "almost build a storage rack". :) Thanks for the feedback though. Always open to improvement.

I tried that originally as that’s how I wanted to do it. But the box is bigger than I thought and doesn’t fit between the wheel wells. With the drawer open, it’s 40 in long. It’s a 40 in tire. I would have to move the tire anytime I wanted to get into the drawer with it on top. If I’m going to build something to hold the tire in front of the box I want it below the bedline as I prefer that look. Don’t really care for the tire above the bed side.
