The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

How much does your trailer weight? I’ve got a 16 footer that weighs 3400 dry and right at 4K loaded. I skipped gears and went right to a Magnuson. Have pulled out trailer a couple times with the blower and without and made a pretty substantial difference.

 

A lot depend on your driving style. The truck isn’t really designed for towing though it can in small doses. Towing and in mountain passes should be in 4th anyway and I would expect downshifts to 3rd. You aren’t going to run 6th under load at speeds.

 

Dry weight is 3495#. Loaded it varies from 4000#-4500#.

 

Any update to how you are likeing your 4.88s with the weight you are running? Hows your mpgs and truck feel?

 

Definitely much smoother than stock gears. I can't compare to 5.29's since I've never driven on those. I've got about 1000 miles on it since regear to 4.88s. It is much better getting up to speed, feels like a lot of the weight I have added is gone. Gets up to about 73 mph nice and smooth before it will consider what gear to be in at all. I am taking it on a long road trip here from Denver to Michigan and back, leaving next week. That will be the test as we log some long miles on the interstate. I expect it will do great as we head down hill and remain close to sea level for the rest of the trip!

 

Thats awesome! Please keep me updated! Im in a similar situation as you and a I'm a little hesitant on which gears to get. I'm leaning more towards 4.88s, because im moving to Germany in a year and bringing the Taco. Would like to be able to at least cruise at 80 on the autobahn which is very normal over there. Also keeping the mpgs up would be nice, since gas is crazy pricy over there.

I'll be heavier in weight as well due to camping gear and running under a 33 inch tire.

@JoeCOVA i know you're pretty educated on this and very set on the 5.29s. What do you think?

 

Everyones talking 35s here, but is anyone running a tall and skinny? 35x 10, 11? Wondering what type of effect that has from not running a full width 315 35". Any improvements?

 

Still planning on a regear this summer, plan on going to 33” tires, with a MT, you guys think 5.29 is better then 4.88? At 4.3 so don’t see 4.88 being significant in terms of gains.

 

I'm A/T w/33's. Did 5.29's because we bought a 22' travel trailer. Finally got my rig tuned properly for the 5.29's and I'm not happy at all. Wish I would have turbo'd or S/C instead.

really!? Think I’d be better off spending that couple grand on SC? I almost went to the Mag SC but was super bummed that their dyno numbers were horrible compared to their original advertised numbers (when they claimed fifty percent gains) and compared to how much they lose on the dyno even compared to their 2nd gen setup.

 

i think what he's trying to say is i wish i got an V8... i on 33s, regeared and tuned, very much happy from stock... pretty sure most of everyone here is happy with there setup too.. but i think towing a 22' trailer is taking away the fun...

 

Yea I feel you. I went from midsize truck, to HD 3/4, to 1/2ton back to midsize. Biggest trailer I tow is about 4K pounds and the taco does okay, but man if I had to tow very often with anything heavier I want a diesel and the Taco for DD.

 

I dunno, I'm biased as I went to 5.29's and don't think it's all that great, and I've heard from a few people lately that agree. It's an improvement, but the truck is still slow as shit and really struggles on the slightest of inclines.

 

Agree with 4.88's but you're in 5th and 6th gear which keeps Transmission cooler and meant to be the way it should be. So when your tacking at 3000 rpm your in 5th not 4th going up in altitude.

my gears were fine that were done by them but I’ve def seen on the forum the hit or miss gear setups

 

I guess I’m one of the unlucky ones, that’s unfortunate they cannot stay consistent.
