#1 - Paint touch-up for a scratch like OP's is MUCH more difficult than simply filling a rock chip with paint.

#2 - I assume your Tacoma is not Silver Sky Metallic as I purchased 1/2 oz of silver sky metallic touch-up paint from Dr Color Chip for $35 and it wasn't even close to a match. In fact, I ended up using my GM Blade Silver touch-up paint for my Corvette which was only $11 as it was a much closer match.

I will never purchase touch-up paint from Dr Color Chip again.

OP, probably best to just replace the fender flare as you will never get those scratches out to a point they are not noticeable.

The paint scratch looks (from the photo) as though it can be buffed out. Be careful not to buff through your clear coat.

Jeezus... I can't believe the pedestal that some people put these trucks on. Use 'em, and have fun! Doesn't mean you need to abuse the crap out of them, but even with the insane amount of scratches I've put on this thing enjoying it's great off road capabilities, it's still a great looking truck.

Thanks all for your input. I’m really only concerned with the paint portion, as it gets pretty wet down here year round so I worry about rust. The plastic fender flare.. is what it is. I agree it gives character.

my first vehicle was a ‘94 Ford Bronco we bought from my brother-in-law in 2000. That thing was sweet! Over the years, I put quite a few dings and scratches over the years. Scratch there? From running off the road and smacking a mailbox when I was reaching over to push in the cigarette lighter (remember those?) ding there? From someone backing into me in the HS parking lot. Bump up front? From coming in too fast late one night when I was late for curfew and catching the side of the garage..

all-in-all, each scratch or blemish tells a story. I miss that bronco, but man was it a gas hog..

did it even go through the clear coat? I feel like I'd forget about that scratch after a few days. My dented and in some spots bare metal quarter panel, less so

You probably good with some polish compound and wax… a year after I got mine I was driving to work one morning and went around a bend. It was dark out then. Heard a bang, clunk and dragging noise for about 3 seconds. Got to work and found passenger rear door scratch to the metal, rear quarter panel dented and a puncture in my right rear tire sidewall…. Still don’t know what I ran over:anonymous: just glad I don’t see it everyday!! It’s all on the passenger side. Applied some touch up paint and I moved on

Yup, first cut is the deepest. Especially when your new 2013 Taco is only 3 months old. And keyed down the whole side. In a hospital parking lot. After spending the entire night with wife in the ER. And no security cams in thel parking lots. You'll get over it, just hope it doesn't take as long as I did lol. Mine was too deep for a cosmetics fix so I brushed some clear nail polish on and waited for the rust which never came. Time heals all wounds.

Silver sky metallic from my local dealer was a 100% match for me. Used it for filling some rock chips and even a scratch. Buffed it afterwards and I couldn't be happier for the cost of the touch up paint and polish.

Since this was a Friday thread:
    1. Beat your vise like you beat your children so it knows not to do that again.
    2. Line-X the truck so it will never be scratched again.

Serious note: Is the scratch just in the clearcoat, or down to the primer? Clearcoat scratch can be buffed and sealed with a wax or ceramic coating to disappear. Need to repeat yearly.

About 2 months ago. I washing my truck with the power washer and switched from my foam cannon to the power washer tip. I thought it was fully clicked in. Hit the trigger and put a dent square in the driver's door. Smdh

If I have another mishap, I will try the OEM paint, but never Dr Color Chip again.

Try a Mr. Clean magic eraser and some elbow grease on the flare. Not sure if it will work on scratches, but those things are the shit for oxidized and faded fender flares. May work on those scratches. Worth a shot. You only have $4 to lose to try it.

its part of the 3rd gen culture. They are worried about their trade-in instead of actually using the truck as a truck.

Haha. I didn't realize after I brought my Tacoma home. There was a scratch on the back passenger side door. It's down low and once I put wax on it. I don't even know it is there.
