Understood, just saying that's the most typical reason for this issue.
    Good luck Charlie

I really hope it's not the clockspring; Of all the things to quit working in my truck that could have quit working, I'd say the cruise control is probably the least catastrophic; It has been WAYYY to hot here lately for the A/C to even think about giving out! I was driving home from a car show today, on the turnpike, with a temperature in the 90s and a heat index of 102; The A/C blew ICE COLD!

I've had my ac quit twice in my 3rd gen in the middle of july/August here. It was a tad miserable, as I was on a trail both times.
Had the ac running at max, 100 plus degrees outside.. stopped and got out to evaluate a section of road in front of me, got back in and it sounded like two monkey fight under the glove box. Toyota replaced the blower/fan and all was good. A year later, same shit... oh now there is a recall on that part. So, I went through 2 fan/blowers in a year. The new part number seems to be holding.. I am not holding my breath on it though.

I've had problems with the blower motor in my truck too; Never had the A/C totally quit on me though...

Even back in 2018 when the evap core was leaking!

Since you can turn it on it's almost certainly not the clockspring as its a single wire for all cruise functions including on/off.

And the wheel position sensor was almost damaged by the guy at H&R; If that was broken again, the green "CRUISE" light wouldn't even come on (I know this from the fiasco with H&R)...

Could not help but notice you have an older 2nd Gen; Do you have a backup camera, and if so, what brand? The one I've got in my truck is malfunctioning...

I guess your 3 answers to check are...
    Clock spring
    Switch
    Sensor

I'm thinking the switch, which as I've said is really lucky because I bought an OEM one last December when I thought my truck was prewired and I just had to add the switch...

Shit happens, could have wound too tight, yet you never turned the wheel to full lock. Now, possibly you have and it broke. Fyi... nothing is made like used to be. Everything is made to break, so somebody has a job to repair it.;)

But I just get the distinct feeling that since the green "CRUISE" light is on, all that shit is fine...

All I can say is... In the past 15 years of owning a tacoma with cruise control. I can count on 1 hand, how many times it been engaged. Total is 5. Totally not an important feature when you drive from stop sign to stop sign it red light to red light.

The only time I’ve used it off the highway is in speed traps where the speed limit is 35 MPH or less, and in school zones; One of my friends got slapped with a $500 fine for doing 28 in a 15 MPH school zone, and I do not want to end up in that position!

Sorry, I can help with a camera.
I don’t have one. I’m still running my stock radio.

Maybe look at the reviews on the Crutchfield website.
Or sort through the reviews on Amazon?

I work in a maintenance / electronics field and have for Many Many years.

Sometimes new things are broken from the factory.
Sometimes they work for a few minutes and blow up / break.
Sometimes they work for a few Days Weeks Months then blow up / break for no apparent reason or cause.

Just a possible means of failure.

OEM flow. Where would the added aftermarket intercept?
