The difference in price of my 2016 SR5 and 2020 OR was like $2-3000 if I remember correctly. It seemed well worth trading in the SR5 in for the OR that I probably should have bought in the first place. It's all very personal though.

some awnsered it perfectly. do you off road hard and need a lockers and crawl control? if not, get the SR5. i Needed the rear locker and got the off road package. i could of gotten a sr5 but there is no way i would allow myself to dish out $1500-$2000 for a rear locker.

No they don't, there's always a few (maybe majority) of people saying you don't need an off-road if you don't need those features.

I’ve used my locker twice in the last year and was glad I had it both times.

For 2021 the price difference from the SR5 to a Sport/OR is $1975 in the most common configuration DCSB AT 4x4.
    SR5 = $35,555
    Sport/OR = $37,530

Are you anywhere near some trails to use it? Because the extra I spent on the OR is the best money I ever spent!

I'd pay the $2k extra for the OR. Unless you want the OR AC w/ 6MT that you can't have in the US because Toyota is stupid.

    I wanted a manual and I didn't want a hood skewp.

That clarified the decision for me.

Meet in the middle and get a trd sport, 99% of people with an off-road haven’t touched the locker button

How is Sport the middle when it cost the same as the OR, unless you are talking about something other than price?

    It's a secret
If you "save" x$ on an SR5 vs. the TRD OR...it's likely you will find something else to binge spend that "saved" monies on with something else, so you will still end up not really saving any money. If you spend the extra for the TRD OR trim level...you will still somehow spend other monies on something else...because...it's just fun to spend money when you have it...haha.

The trd sport trim is slightly cheaper than the off-road, $33,310 vs $34,565 (starting), main difference being the locker and different shocks

Remember too OP that if you go with a more expensive trim now you’ll get more when it comes time to trade/sell down the road.

That starting price difference is strictly because the Off Road does not come in Manual Transmission Access Cab. If you configure both models the same they have the same exact price, wouldn't make any sense to configure them differently when comparing prices anyway. If you go back to Post #28 l listed a price example too.

I find the locker to be mostly useless because many times when I'd like to lock up the rear axle I also don't want to be in 4 low. But that's just me coming from a bunch of vehicles were I could lock the rear and/or front whenever I wanted to.

I've never once needed to use the MTS or Crawl Control. In stock form, there's not really any situation the tacoma is going to get itself into where knowing how to drive is less useful than electronics.

I have actually needed to use the rear locker a couple times, but mostly because I got myself off camber going through a wash and needed the tire on the ground to give me a push.

    Check build thread!
IMHO- Yes its worth it. Not because the sr5 is bad, but because for only a couple thousand extra, you're getting your first set of mods basically done from the factory, with a warrantee. That was my take on it.

I knew if I was getting an SR5, I was adding a/ts, shocks, a locker, and possibly some cosmetics. That's basically what I got with the offroad, so that's what I went with.
